“News and Interests” is the name of a new feature for the Windows 10 operating system, which is a dynamic content feed. It was introduced as part of the Developer Channel (issue 21286) and is currently being widely tested among members of the “Windows Preview Program” in several regions. Microsoft has not yet officially specified whether News and Interests will be implemented in one of the upcoming Windows 10 updates this year, but the appearance of the innovation in the stable version is more than likely.

In this regard, I introduce in advance and tell you the main thing: what is the “News and Interests”, how it works and what it shows, as well as how to disable it. All the answers in one material.

The most convenient way is to read news in your browser. You can find all of the interesting news content on our website. You can also find interesting information on your next IT ExamCollection

What is News and Interests in Windows 10

The “News and Interests” feature displays personalized information about the weather and user interests inside a special ribbon that’s built into the taskbar. The data is presented as interactive widgets with automatic updates throughout the day (similar to live tiles in the Start menu). In addition to the weather, the user can follow world news, stock quotes, sporting events, and the current traffic situation in the city.

Information is shown according to the selected interests. The Russian region and language are fully supported. There are no ads in the feed and all links open in the Microsoft Edge browser, even if the default browser is an application from another vendor.

According to Microsoft, instead of having to switch between apps or computer and smartphone to keep up with what’s going on, it’s easier to look at your newsfeed directly from the taskbar – quickly and at any time. As more and more people spend time at their computers for work, study, play and entertainment, the News & Interests feed should be a productive tool for those who want to stay in touch with the outside world without disrupting their workflow.

There are also plans to integrate the News & Interests feed into the Microsoft Edge homepage in the future, if testing in today’s form is viewed positively by insiders.

How to remove the News and Interests feed from the taskbar

If you don’t want the news and weather on your computer’s taskbar, there’s the easiest option to disable the feed without deep intervention in your operating system. The button will just disappear from view, but the feature itself will remain in Windows 10 and can still be activated at the desired moment.

  • Right-click on the “News and Interests” button in the taskbar.
  • From the context menu that pops up, select “News & Interests”.
  • Select the “Disable” option at the end of the list.

The change will take effect immediately – the feed will disappear from the taskbar immediately. You can also reduce the feed call button to display only one weather icon. To restore the feature, right-click on an empty space in the taskbar, hover over “News & Interests” and then select “Show icon and text” or “Show icon only”.

How to delete the News & Interests feed using the Registry Editor

  • Use the Windows + R key combination to open the “Run” utility and type “regedit.exe” in the start field, then click “OK”. Or search for “Registry Editor” through a search.
  • Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Feeds.
  • Find a DWORD type parameter called “ShellFeedsTaskbarViewMode”.
    • If it is not in the list, right-click on the “Feeds” group and choose “Create” → “DWORD parameter (32 bit)” from the context menu.
    • Name the parameter “ShellFeedsTaskbarViewMode”.
  • Assign a value to it. The following values are supported:
    • Value 0: the weather icon and text are displayed.
    • Value 1: only the weather icon is displayed.
    • Value 2: The function is disabled.
  • Restart your computer.
