Edifier is a brand that we have tested many of their wireless earbuds such as the Edifier Neobuds S which costs £179.99. In this review, we are looking at a pair of buds that are much budget-friendly known as the Edifier W240TN which currently costs £79.

First Impressions

The Edifier W240TN comes in two colours black or white and the key features these earbuds come with are:

  • Dual Dynamic Driver
  • 8.5 hours battery life in the buds (ANC off)
  • Fast Charging
  • Hybrid ANC
  • AI voice call noise cancellation
  • Game Mode
  • IP55 rated

Edifier W240TN ANC In-Ear Headphones review

Design

The first thing you will notice about the W240TN is they have moved away from that futuristic design seen with the Neobuds S. These buds are designed in the inspired style of a piston in a car engine but with a sleek design.

We found they fit very well in your ears and offer that snug fit now if you need to get a better fit the buds come with 4 pairs of ear tips (XS, S, L) The medium fit come already on the buds.

The buds and the charging case are built using premium plastic material and provide that durable feel they don’t feel like they will break after a few uses. The buds do not protrude too much out of your ears and are lightweight at only 5.6g meaning after a long period of time you will forget they are even in your ears.

The case has a soft touch finish with some nice curves and the case is not too large you can fit the case into your jeans without any issue. The size of the case measures 2.3 x 1.7x 1.1 inches and it’s lightweight at only 39.6g. What I really love about this case is the designer must have been a KnightRider fan as it has a LED strip that reminds me of Kit from the TV classic apart from the fact it’s a white light instead of red but it’s still very cool.

The buds can also handle most weather conditions and can also handle a hard workout in the gym when you get very sweaty thanks to the IP55 rating meaning they are both dust and water resistance which will protect them even when you get stuck in the rain.

Controls

Edifier has decided to provide you with a button control instead of the touch controls we are used to with Edifier buds in past reviews. The metallic surface on the buds now has a giant button that is limited to a number of presses either double or triple taps or long presses providing a number of controls without the need of taking your phone out of your pocket perfect if cycling.

We found the controls to be very responsive and never found we pressed by mistake or picked the wrong controls. They also allow you to pick up your smartphone assistant (Siri or Google Assistant) but I found trying to make a command in a busy place can be a little bit of an issue so just take that in mind.  I paired this with my iPhone 12 and no problems due to the use of Bluetooth 5.3 which provides up to a range of 30ft.

Audio Quality

When picking a pair of TWS In-ear headphones the sound quality must be the number one thing to consider and Edifier, as they have done many times, does not disappoint even at this price point. The W240TN comes with that coaxial dual dynamic driver in each bud with the 10mm woofer that provides some nice warmth paired with the 6mm tweeter that delivers some impressive highs and aids in the definition of the mids and the lows.

We tested these out to a wide range of music such as Kate Bush – Running up that Hill you will enjoy the fact the driver structure provides a composed production on every level. The Audio feels precise and has a wide soundstage.   The midrange performs exactly how you want it to be they deliver some surprising bite, especially with distorted guitars, and vocals take an immediate dominance in the sound signature, especially how cleanly they deliver. The treble fleshes out the details for music and even when watching a film.  When you look at the highs, they offer great vocals and instruments that add colour to the overall signature without brightness or harshness to the sound.

There is room for improvement we felt on tracks that are a bit more bass heavy and the W240TN just lack mid-bass.  This can be improved a little via the edifier app and that will provide a nice texture but not with enough punch.

ANC/Transparency Mode

The Edifier W240TN provides you with ANC and in testing, I was impressed they did a solid job of reducing unwanted distractions like passing cars or that group of ladies who chat quite loudly on the train. When walking to work I did notice you do get a little noise leakage due to the wind but that can be expected.

Edifier has also provided the user with transparency mode otherwise known as an ambient mode which provides you with a hiss-free implementation with no lag and built-in mics that let me hear a conversation even when am pretending not to listen to that conversation in the office.

The Edifier App

We discussed the adjustable EQ and that is where the Edifier App comes into play it provides you with all the features you want the home screen allows you to monitor battery levels, switch on ANC or transparency mode, and that customizable EQ in which you can adjust the sound to suit your needs.

What you also have is a game mode that can be activated when you’re zoned in playing call of duty these buds improve latency improves slightly but there is still a slight delay which is disappointing but if you’re just having a quick game these buds will be ok.

Call Quality

In addition to the audio quality and the ANC, you can also use these buds to take calls due to the built-in mics in both earbuds and the quality is fine I found I could be heard and could hear who is speaking clearly. If the environment is nice and quiet but as we know calls can happen at any time of the day. When you increase the outside noise the call quality can be affected, and more outdoor noise comes in than you might want. It’s a shame but these are budget-friendly in-ear headphones so it’s not a massive surprise.

Battery Life

The Edifier W240TN offers 7 hours of use when ANC is switched on and the case will provide you an additional 14 hours in the charging case. When you switch ANC off it will provide you with a slight increase in battery life to 8.5 hours on a single charge and an additional 17 hours from the case. This amount of battery life kept me happy when I was listening to them travelling to work, while I had a workout, and just when it was a time in the day to just listen to some Ibiza chill out at the end of a hard day these earbuds gave me plenty of battery life needed.

You also have the bonus of fast charging 10 minutes of charge will provide you with 2 hours of battery life which will get you out of trouble if that were to happen.

Verdict

The Edifier W240TNs provide you with a strong pair of buds to really compete with others available at that price point. If you like that piston-style build you will be very pleased with what you get from these buds. The battery life is very good and the audio quality considering the price point will put a smile on your face.

Could Edifier improve yes, the fact you don’t have multi-point pairing would have been nice to have added. Call quality is also an area that really needs improvement, especially in busy environments. Apart from that if you do not want to splash the bank or can’t and want a pair of buds that does most things well these are a very good option to consider.
