In our second Oppo review we covering the Oppo Find X3 Neo 5G which is the middle device in the trio of Oppo Find X3 devices recently released. The X3 Neo is the mid-range option costing £699 available from Amazon.

The Oppo Find X3 Neo just like the Find X3 Lite also has no IP rating and does not come with wireless charging what it does come with is that fast charging option which was the star of the show for the Find X3 Lite.

Design

The Oppo Find X3 Neo is a stunning looking phone it comes in two colours Starlight Black & Galactic Silver. The Starlight Black come with the exclusive Glow Design and which offers a stylish matte black finish with a delicately etched pyramid texture on the rear which is also fingerprint-resistant. You also get that Oppo logo on the back which with a design like this they could have left the logo off as it slightly affects the style of the phone.

Also on the back of this phone, you will get a noticeable camera bump it won’t cause an issue but is noticeable but with a good phone case, you will be able to keep that camera bump safe.

The front display like the X3 Lite it only has a punch hole selfie camera in the top left and the screen offers a curved screen design. Also like the X3 Lite, the fingerprint sensor is built into the screen which adds to the overall design. Other Similarities are the controls with the power on the right and volume controls on the left side of the phone.

The phone also comes with a speaker grill on the base next to the USB-C  port but the difference to the X3 Lite is the 3.5mm headphone jack is missing.

The screen comes with a curved finish on the sides of the phone which will provide a fuller picture when watching a film. The dimensions are 159.9 x 72.5 x 8mm and weigh 184g which is still a very lightweight phone when using the device in one hand.

Overall the design of this phone screams premium especially with the Glow design and curved screen and will hold its own against the midrange Samsung Galaxy models available to us.

Display

The display on the Oppo Find X3 Neo does not disappoint it’s bright and vivid thanks to its 6.55 inch AMOLED Display with a 1080 x 2400 resolution which is ideal for a device this size.  The phone also comes with a 90Hz which is the same as the budget X3 Lite option and this adds to an extra smoothness when scrolling on social media seeing all these people taking pictures of the benefits of the latest unlocking of covid restrictions. This phone also comes with HDR10+ which improves the colours within this display and helps everything stay balanced.

When watching “This is Us” on Amazon Prime on this phone you got no lag or dullness it offers a fantastic display considering the cost.

Performance

Under the bonnet for the Oppo Find X3 Neo comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 885 which is a very good chipset and only recently replaced by the new 865+. The speed of this phone is fantastic as you might expect. This phone also impresses on the storage side with 12GB of RAM and a 256GB of internal storage. However, like the Find X3 Lite you don’t have the option for a Micro SD Card. I don’t feel this is a game-changer.

When testing this phone when playing a game like Call of Duty it performs with ease and handles high frame rates and you get no lag. Oppo also gives you the Game Space app which is meant to optimize performance but I am unable to tell if it really made a difference as the quality of gaming on this phone is quality.

When we run the benchmarks tests via Geekbench 5 the Oppo Find X3 Neo offers 915 in a single core and 3137 in multi-core and these scores are close to something like a OnePlus 8.

In terms of Operating system, the phone comes with Andriod 11 as well as Oppo’s own Operating System which comes with some pre-installed apps as well as the Google apps via the Andriod 11 offering. As I have said before this ColorOS feels a little pointless.

Camera Review by James Robertson-Milligan

Having reviewed a few of the phones from the Oppo Range in regards to their photographic capabilities I was expecting good things from the Oppo X3 Neo and on paper they make some pretty bold claims about the camera on this handset, nestled into the back of this handset comes a quad-cam AI camera which boasts 50! yes, that’s right a 50mp camera with wide angle now that’s a big camera on a medium budget phone, So is Oppo going after Samsung and Apple in terms of camera capabilities well in my opinion they are up there with them with this handset.

Oppo Find X3 Neo 5G

You can tell this handset operates on 50mp and you will see a bit further down in my review in the sample pictures. the selfie camera is off to the left of the phone when with the size of the screen it could have been centred but hey I’m not going to split hairs over that as it’s a great camera and you get some great shots!

So, what are the crucks of this camera, what can you do picture-wise, well, built-in features are:

  • Night
  • Video
  • Phot
  • Portrait
  • More sub-Cat, where you get a few extra’s such as Dual-view video, slo-mo, time-lapse, film, Expert, Extra HD, Pano Text scanner, Macro and sticker

So it’s the same set-up as the last Oppo I reviewed the Find X3 Lite, the only difference I can see on paper is that the camera has an extra 4mp on it that’s all well in terms of camera capabilities anyway!

The phone uses a 6.55″ screen so you will get great clarity on the pictures that you have taken making full use of the AMOLED edge to edge screen to get the best viewing experience from your shots. One thing this phone will make you do is use all your internal storage for photo’s as this will really bring out the imaginative photographer inside you! So, let’s look at what the camera has to offer in terms of picture quality.

Portrait-  Now I love a portrait shot and the effects you get with portrait with that subtle background blur and once again my trusty assistant was more than happy to step in for this shot, I think it’s because I had a gravy bone for him, but look at the quality and finish of this image I just cannot fault this one bit. The outcome just speaks volumes and I know that when you the user plays around with Portrait you too will be amazed at what you get on this handset!

Macro–  I also love macro I love the detail you get of a close-up shot and the macro setting on this phone defiantly won’t let you down in terms of colour, richness, clarity and most important of all attention to detail, you have to get within 4cm of your chosen subject to get the extra fine detail but once there and you take the shot this will give you great detail! I decided to take one of a rose and /the outcome to me for a mobile phone was amazing!

Selfie-  Now selfies are more and more popular and probably more selfies are taken than any other type of photo and on this front-mounted camera which holds an impressive 32MP you will get brilliant results, once again my trusted right-hand man decided to be involved in a selfie-and the outcome is clean, crisp and clear, you will defiantly utilise this to its full advantage and flood social media with lots of striking poses and professional quality profile pics!

Auto-  Auto or Photo mode in this case the picture could not come out better with true colour and again on this AMOLED 6.5″ screen comes out in HD quality. The clarity, true tone and true colours to the naked eye are all bang on the money!

Wide angle – Wide angle on this camera won’t let you down, getting full detail and full angle focus with no out of focus or blurred areas. the camera works well and gets a lot of crisp clean and clear detail in, I like the wide-angle on this! works very well indeed.

Pro-  So once again this handset holds the pro mode, so it having DSLR settings on your phone making the need for taking a DSLR out with you on days out pretty much redundant! carrying a DSLR is heavy and can weigh you down, now you have this on a phone that weighs in at 186g as opposed to a much much heavier DSLR wrapped around your neck, the settlings can be fettled with to get the best shot for your environment and the shots come out with good focus and clarity almost as good as my Canon DSLR.

Extra HD–  Not sure why you need Extra HD on this, as the picture comes out fantastic in any mode that you use, to the naked eye you won’t be able to tell the difference between the pictures to be honest. I think they could of left this feature off and put something else in like BOKEH or Light painting to really make this camera come alive.

Full zoom –  I was impressed with the full zoom on this phone as when you go full zoom on a number of phones the handset becomes shaky and pictures become grainy and just blughhh but on this handset, you still get a decent amount of sharpness and decent clarity to the picture so full zoom on this for a cheeky close-up won’t let you down!

Night function– In most phones, the newly added night function doesn’t really work that well nor is it well pulled off, however on the Neo this works well, I took a picture as the light was fading and I still got a nice processed picture, I use the term processed as once you have taken the picture you have to stand in the same position holding the phone to your subject for a further 5 seconds whilst it adds the light and background colours.

On a personal note, I am still out on this as I think this function could be better replaced with a different function, I’m not sure how well this will work in a pub or club setting and how long your friends will want to stay in the same position after the picture has been taken to get the perfect picture, just say cheese for 10 seconds 🙂

In all this handset will stand the test of time and will stand up and speak out against most mid-high end camera phones. I like reviewing the Oppo’s as the cameras are solid and you get great outcome’s on pictures that you take.

Oppo is certainly a name to look at when choosing a camera phone for photo capabilities and defiantly one to be taken seriously in today’s market. I score this a solid 9/10 I would go 10/10 but I just think some features could have been removed and others put in to really utilise this quad-cam handset. Good work Oppo I like this!

Battery Life

With a phone like this, you need a respectable battery and Oppo do not disappoint with its 4500mAh battery life which when tested the phone lasted the whole day with some battery life still left over to carry you over to the next day if you wanted. If you use the phone for gaming or watching videos it won’t give you that extra battery life but should still last the day.

The Oppo Find X3 Neo does not offer wireless charging which might annoy some potential buyers. However, what you do get is a 65W fast charging option which will give you a full charge in about 35minutes which is very impressive. Running low on battery a quick 5-minute charge really does make a difference and gives you that boost to get you out of a tight spot when you see that red battery icon.

Verdict

The Oppo Find X3 Neo is a very good option for those who want a phone that not only looks good but also performs just as good as it looks. The Snapdragon 885 offers excellent performance and the 6.55-inch Amoled display gives you that sharp and vibrant display you want from a mobile phone.

 Oppo Find X3 Neo 5G

The only real negatives about this phone are the lack of IP rating and Wireless charging might put a few off who might prefer the iPhone 12 Mini that does come with an IP Rating or wireless charging.

If you can look past that you will be very happy with this purchase. If you currently own the Find X2 there are a few changes in terms of the battery life, better processor and improved camera set-up which offers some impressive shots.

If the Oppo Find X3 Pro is slightly out of your price range then the Find X3 Neo gives you most things you can want but only making a few sacrifices. It’s well worth the investment.
