With the biggest game titles ever increasing their prices, I look at 5 of the best free games that are available RIGHT NOW that you can check out! There’s no harm in trying something that’s free, right?

1) Splitgate

Rating – 8.3/10

A fresh Halo-like, fast-paced, sci-fi, first-person shooter, mixed with portals and jetpacks, Splitgate is one of the best free games out right now. Although its hype died down since its release, Splitgate is still a very fun game. You can be creative with your eliminations by planting portals in different locations to set up a perfect shot, something which adds a new flavour to your traditional FPS.

With 15 different game modes, including traditional modes such as Deathmatch and Domination and less conventional modes like Shotty Snipers (my personal favourite) and Takedown, Splitgate covers pretty much every avenue in terms of game modes. Splitgate is also equipped with 20 maps each with its own unique setting and play style. The map selection includes a research facility inside an active volcano, an underwater luxury hotel, an alien crash site, and much more.

Splitgate caters for both casual and competitive gamer, offering casual matchmaking but also ranked matchmaking. If you crave competition and want to try to be the best, give ranked a shot and you never know, you might one day be good enough for one of Splitgates’ eSports teams!

2) Warframe

Rating – 8.0/10

A sci-fi third-person shooter and slasher, Warframe is a must if science fiction is your cup of tea. Pick the Warframe you desire and find the required parts to build your ultimate alien-killing, robot-destroying machine of war. Go from planet to planet and mission to mission to not only rack up your Mastery Rank, but also progress in the main storyline, centred around ‘The Tenno’, a race of ancient warriors who have awoken from centuries of suspended animation far into Earth’s future to find themselves at war in the planetary system with different factions. The Tenno use their powered Warframes along with a variety of weapons and abilities to complete missions. There is an abundance of cool and interesting Warframes to choose from, whether you want a strong and trustworthy tank like Rhino, or a flashy beat-playing DJ in Octavia, you’ll surely find a Warframe that fits your style.

Team up with your friends and form a squad of Warframes that compliment each other to make completing those tough missions that are little bit easier. With its cross-platform compatibility, you have no boundaries in who you want to team up with, which is always handy.

Bear in mind, Warframe does require a decent amount of grinding and farming, but that seems to be almost a given in a lot of games these days. Warframe has unlimited progress, allowing you to rank up till the end of time if that’s what you desire.

3) Apex Legends

Rating – 8.6/10

A battle royale with a twist, Apex Legends is essentially Overwatch mixed with Warzone, all in the fighting style of Titanfall. Choose your Legend and dive into the 60-player packed battlefield in a team of up to three. Each Legend has its own perks, from a drone-bearing hacker in Crypto, to bombing rockstar in Fuse, there’s bound to be a Legend that suits your play style.

Apex is a looting battle royale, urging you to travel around the ever-changing map to equip yourself with the best weapons, ranging in variety from common, rare, epic, and finally legendary. This same scale is used for things like weapon skins, character quips and character skins which you can obtain via Apex Packs.

Apex’s dynamic map system allows for different maps to rotate every few hours. I personally like this feature as it keeps the game fresh and removes the need for a big update just for a new map, like in Warzone.

There are other game modes like Arena for the faster, Call of Duty-like play style in a small map with 3 players on each team. It’s a straightforward deathmatch, giving you a nice option for when the battle royale isn’t going too smoothly.

4) Halo Infinite Multiplayer

Rating – 8.8/10

A timeless classic reinvented for the modern gaming age, Halo: Infinite brings fast-paced futuristic battles, all in the famous Halo style that we all know and love. With its iconic announcer lines, weapons and maps, Halo: Infinite brings you nostalgia along with up-to-date graphics and quality. Halo has nailed it when it comes to reinventing a classic into a modern game, playable by old school Halo fans and new gamers.

Although Infinite is only PVP multiplayer, you can purchase the game featuring the single-player campaign for around £30. However, I see most people sticking with the free version, as it delivers so much quality for no price whatsoever.

Halo: Infinite has all the classic game modes to fuel your nostalgia cravings, with game-changing modes from the past such as Oddball, alongside the standard Halo game modes like Slayer and Capture the Flag. They have also added a new 12v12 Big Team Battle game mode called Stockpile where players collect “power seeds” found across the map and deposit them back at their base to score points.

With Halo’s legacy speaking for itself and its price is a whopping £0, I see very little reason for you to not try this game out!

5) Enlisted

Rating – 7.9/10

The best way to describe this game is a more realistic, simulation-like version of Battlefield 1, but with no doubt worse graphics. Lead your squad of fighters into battle, through a large variety of landscapes, from Berlin with the in-depth Reichstag design to the cold and unforgiving icy plains of Russia. Enlisted sets itself apart from games like Call of Duty and Battlefield by allowing you to switch to different members of your 5-man squad, similar to Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon on the Xbox 360, meaning when you die, you essentially have 4 more lives. This feature could be improved by adding the ability to properly lead your squad through instructions and call outs, however, it is a nifty feature, nonetheless.

Enlisted is realistic in terms of how much damage each weapon emits, with most guns killing the enemy in one or two shots, like Hardcore mode in Call of Duty. This creates an intense gameplay feel as you are always wary of a stray sniper bullet flying across the map and taking you out instantly, just like how it would feel in real life presumably. Its maps accuracy also adds to the realism, with the Reichstag, in particular, feels very cool to storm, as you can battle throughout the halls of Hitler’s and Himmler’s office like you are really an Allied soldier from 1945.

All in all, this game is fun and cool to play if history and realism is your thing. If you prefer fast-paced and close-combat fighting like Call of Duty, I would steer clear, but since Enlisted is free, there’s no harm in giving it a go!
