Own an iPhone and want to keep your lighting cable tangle free check out the latest from Atom Studios
Since the EU has now pushed for the universal charging option to be USB-C there is still a use of USB-A and if you own an iPhone or iPad then you will need to use a lightning cable so this could result in having quite a few charging cables around the house.
In this review, we have been testing the latest from Atom Studios with their flat universal charging cable that has a lighting port at one end and the other a choice between USB-A or USB-C. The charging cable currently costs from £21 to £24 depending on the size of cable you order.
First Impressions
As mentioned there is a slight price difference you can purchase the 0.5m for £21.99 or the 1.8m for £24.99 and either cable size is available in just the nitrogen blue colour. As mentioned the cable ports can create the following combinations:

Unboxing
Atom Studios sent the charging cable in packaging that was fully recyclable and the packaging was grey in colour with the company branding on the front and the a-s symbols also displayed on the box. There was also a slipcover in blue that had a drawing of the cable and connectors on the front and indicated the size of the cable. In this review, we were sent the 0.5m option.
Inside the packaging, you are provided with a grey-coloured drawstring bag that had the Atom Studio logo printed on the bottom left of the bag.
Inside the drawstring bag, you will find the flat-style USB-C to lighting cable with the Atom Studio logo on either side of the cable ends. You will also find a USB-A to USB-C adapter.
Design
This charging cable has silicone lines around both the USB-C & Lightning ports and the USB-C end securely accommodated the USB-A port when inserted into the USB-C port.
You will notice that the additional segment which is the USB-C to USB-A connection has the company logo etched into the surface.
Moving to the cable itself is made from sand-based silicone and the tips are formed from recyclable aluminium. This was selected for premium quality and durability while at the same time being eco-friendly.
Durability
In order to test the cable we bent each prong and moved it back and forth several times and were very impressed with the outcome. We even did the same test when the USB-A adaptor was fitted on the USB-C end and noticed a slight amount of deflection along the USB-C end but it hardly caused an issue.
I was very pleased with the quality and durability of the flat cable when my iPhone or iPad was fully charged I removed the cable and was able to coil the cable without it being a knotted mess.
To add to the durability of the cable you can purchase an additional cable weight. The pebble-shaped weight is smooth all over with a non-slip base. You simply place the weight on top of the cable sliding it into the gap. This then keeps the cable in place but it is an additional purchase.
Verdict
The Atom Studios fast-charging lighting cable provided constant charging speeds in testing and this was consistent regardless if it was an iPhone or iPad. The cable has an output via USB-C of up to 18W and via USB-A of 12W.
I was very pleased with the quality of the cables and how Atom Studios put the cable through rigorous testing to show they are built to last. For example, they bend the cable back and forth over 3000 times to make sure it ticked the durability box.
I was happy to have the options of USB-A and USB-C this allowed me to charge the cable if I was in the car as I only have a USB-C port or when being in the office and only have a USB-A port on my desk. I found the cable to be excellent value for money and found the inclusion of the carry bag also very useful for everyday travel when I was not using the cable.
If you’re looking for a charging cable that is convenient and won’t get tangled at the same time being eco-friendly this charger gets the thumbs up from us.
