Beats is one of the most well-known brands on the headphone market so when we got a chance to review the latest Beats Fit Pro it grabbed our interest. Taking a first look at the buds they are workout-friendly with the use of a wingtip design that aids a secure fit when hitting the gym ideal for those with getting fit as a New Year’s Resolution.

The Beats Fit Pro are also compatible with the Beats app which allows non-apple users to benefit from the same features you gain from using them with an Apple phone. The Beats Fit Pro cost £199 and first impressions are they sound excellent. If you compare them to the Apple Air Pods at £229 let’s take a closer look if they are worth saving a few extra pounds compared to Apple’s offering.

Design

The first thing you notice about the Beats Fit Pro is just how lightweight they are coming in at just 5.6g per bud. I was also surprised at how comfortable they are and how secure they fit in your ear due to the flexible wingtips that tuck into your ear. I found regardless of whether I hit the gym or used these for my commute to the office.

The Beats Fit Pro gave me no concerns about falling out or feeling uncomfortable. For those who want to hit the gym, the IPX4 rating means they are water and sweat-resistant meaning they will survive a hard workout or if you get caught in the rain running.

Struggling to get a good fit Beats give you 3x sets of ear tips (small, medium or Large) but if you conduct the ear tip fit test if using an iPhone or run the test via the app if using an Andriod device. This test analyses if you’re wearing the right tip for the best seal needed.

Colour-wise the Beats Fit Pro is available in four options:

  • Black
  • White
  • Sege Grey
  • Stone Purple

In this review, we got sent the black pair and the buds come in a colour-matched charging case which is pebble-shaped with the signature logo printed on the front. Turn these to the rear and you have the USB-C port. The size of the case is a little larger than other brands that use that pebble charging case.

Moving to the battery life you get 6 hours in the buds on a single charge and 18 hours in the charging case giving you a total of 24 hours and this is with ANC switched on. Switch ANC off and that battery life increases slightly as a result.

If you need to give it a quick boost there is a fast charge feature that if you charge for 5 minutes will give you an hour of battery life. The only thing I was surprised not to see is the Beats Fit Pro do not support wireless charging this feels like a very strange feature to miss out considering the competition they face in and around the same price tag.

Features

As you may know, Beats are a brand owned by Apple and this is why they come with the superb H1 chip. What this does for Apple users is provide instant set-up and pairing, access to battery status as well as customising the control buttons and Siri voice control. You will see that you can get listening within seconds of getting them out of the box.

Beats have decided against touch-sensitive controls and instead use a reliable button press. The button is positioned where the “B” Icon is on each bud. Short presses will control music playback. The double press is to skip tracks and the triple press is to skip back a track while a longer press switches between ANC & Transparency mode.

In addition to the H1 Chip, you are also provided with a 9.5mm drive unit specifically designed for the Beats Fit Pro. These buds also have in-built sensors that detect when you take an earbud out and will automatically pause the music which is never a bad feature.

There is also the feature of spatial audio and the Beats Fit Pro can play Dolby Atmos via Apple Music. The Spatial Audio’s Multi-dimensional performance and optional dynamic head tracking offer the listener a more immersive experience. You can select if you want spatial audio to be fixed or if it tracks your head’s movement. Just make a note if you keep spatial audio on remember that any non-Dolby Atmos tracks will switch to stereo by default.

The Beats Fit Pro include a total of six mics that contribute to ANC, Transparency mode and better call quality. The earbuds use a mix of outward and inward-facing mics to adjust the ANC according to your environment.

In testing, voices come through clearly on calls although some surrounding noise will still come through on the other side. The ANC was effective at damping down traffic and crowd noise to a distant murmur letting you focus on the music.

When you toggle through the modes Beats adaptive EQ will kick in. This shapes the sound to the shape of your ears. This is why it’s important to make sure you have a good seal in the first place.

Beats also makes sure you do not miss out even if you are an Android user they get features such as:

  • One-Touch Pairing
  • Ear Tip Fit Test
  • Battery Status
  • Customisable Controls via the Beats app

Sound

We have been listening to these buds for the last two weeks and I have been very surprised at how lively and enjoyable they sound regardless of the song you play through. The Beats Fit Pro offers a more balanced approach than the Bass heavy past Beats have been known for.

We have listened to a wide range of music and with the tried and tested “Alice Merton – No Roots”. This track had a clearly defined bassline that gets deep without overpowering the overall balance too much. They provide excellent timing and punch with a pleasing presentation that ties the music together and keeps you hooked.

Vocals are firmly in focus and delivered with clarity that never gets lost in the mix. There’s enough detail that vocal texture and emission come through. Moving to the treble is bright and forward initially but calms down after a few hours. Pump up the volume and it can get the treble a tad excited. That said the Beats Fit Pro never get too sharp to make things uncomfortable this is great as it prevents our ears from getting fatigued when listening for hours on end.

In terms of sound profile, I could not hear much of a change when ANC is switched on there was no added weight or solidity to the music. When spatial audio is activated, you immediately experience the immersive sound field when listening to Dolby Atmos tracks via Apple Music. The dynamic head tracking is more subtle than showy some listeners might prefer it flowed better when moving from left to right.

Verdict

The Beats Fit Pro are excellent fun to listen to and they are so easy to use daily. They come with all the benefits of Airpods Pro when you use them with an Apple phone. However, they also work well with an Android device making them easy to recommend.

Beats Fit Pro

If you are looking for a pair of Airpod alternatives that cost less the Beats Fit Pro have to be high up the list. They offer a secure fit and are designed with the fitness fan in mind. I was also impressed with the overall sound that you get from these buds and apart from the lack of wireless charging it’s hard to find fault.

If you are looking for buds in the £200 price mark then you need to consider the Beats Fit Pro.
