A microphone built for streamers, we take an in-depth look at the intriguing iRig Stream Mic Pro by IK Multimedia.

First Impressions

The iRig Stream Mic Pro gave me good first impressions, with a solid and sturdy-feeling metal stand and a professional robotic design to the actual mic itself. The mic isn’t too big or covered in wires when set up, making it portable and user-friendly, allowing you to use it straight out of the box.

There is an aura of professionalism throughout the iRig Stream Mic Pro, with a flexible joint between the mic and mic stand, allowing users to tilt the mic in whichever way they please.

The mic was accompanied by two different wires, one for USB-C-using devices and the other for Apple’s Lightning cable-compatible devices, such as iPads, iPhones, iPods or iMacs.

Design

As I previously mentioned, the mic is hoisted up on an almost L-shaped metal stand, with a flexible joint to allow the microphone to tilt. This metal stand is heavy, and strong, with a grip on the underside of the bottom, meaning the whole mic setup will not be knocked over in the slightest.

The setup is quick and easy, with only one or two cables needed to get going and recording. The iRig Stream Pro is overall a lightweight and portable mic, allowing you to take this out and about to locations without having to lug around a huge setup.

The microphone itself is predominantly plastic, with a large round dial planted on the bottom half panel of the mic. There are aux-in and aux-out holes on the mic’s underside, allowing for a simple and easy connection to your speakers or headphones.

Microphone in plastic cage

The mesh foam of the mic is locked in by the tough grey plastic cage, with it looking like a truck’s grill in terms of style. There is a MIDI port on the back, accompanied by a DC cable port, again in convenient places for those specific cables.

Performance

IK made sure to kit out the iRig Stream Mic Pro with 24‑bit/96kHz converters, offering a choice of polar patterns (cardioid, figure‑8, omni or stereo) by a simple spin of the dial. This is noticeable when using the mic, with a high-quality and versatile sound that can be switched to whichever pattern on the fly.

Controlling gain, headphone level, monitor mix, and even the high pass filter is all possible using this dial too. Users click down the button to switch to whichever element they want to edit and give the dial a spin to change it.

The iRig Stream Pro really does compete with the top-of-the-range condenser mics, however, it goes that one step further with the versatile editing options, granting you a studio-like experience all inside one microphone.

The Stream Mic Pro having a built-in audio interface makes switching to different devices seamless and easy, allowing you to use the mic with nothing more than just the mic and a cable.

The microphone connects to pretty much any device, working right out of the box without any extra software, and an MFi certification means you can even charge your iPhone while using iRig Stream Mic Pro to record with the (optional) DC power supply. The iRig Stream Mic Pro has lots of bang, but for a hefty buck at around £150. This product is available for a great deal at £134.99 on the What Gadget Store.

Conclusion – Is It Worth it?

With quite a high price at around £150, splashing that on a microphone may seem daunting. However, I must say all in all that the iRig Stream Mic Pro is worth that money, as you get so much more than just a regular desktop mic.
