Smart home lighting expert LIFX support National Grid on Green Light Signal initiative, helping consumers make smarter energy choices.

LIFX, expert in smart home lighting, is delighted to support National Grid on their latest green initiative ‘Green Light Signal’. Highlighting the importance of, and need for clean energy sources within the home, the scheme uses the LIFX mini colour bulb to show consumers when electricity in their home comes from clean energy sources.

National Grid has created an easy-to-use and understandable signal, powered by carbonintensity.org.uk – a carbon intensity forecasting tool that measures the CO2 emissions produced per kilowatt-hour of electricity consumed on a national and regional level.

In order for this signal to activate, all consumers need is the LIFX Mini Colour bulb (normally £44.99, but available at a discounted £29.99 for the Green Light Signal initiative), which when connected to National Grid’s data will turn green when the electricity in the users’ local area is supplied mainly from low-carbon sources.

Users with the LIFX Mini Colour bulb will be alerted as the bulb emits a green light when the carbon intensity of the UK’s grid is low or very low, which acts as a signal to help consumers plan their energy usage and feel positive about powering up.

Martin Carroll, Director of LIFX UK Limited said, “We’re thrilled to be a part of this new Green Light Signal scheme with National Grid. Efforts to move to cleaner energy sources are being seen across the country, but sometimes action for an individual isn’t as simple. Not only does the Green Light Signal Scheme make it easy and accessible for consumers to make smarter energy choices, but it’s a way for people to feel they are participating in the energy transition and are a part of bigger change.”

John Pettigrew, Chief Executive of National Grid, said: “Climate change is the biggest crisis humanity faces. As a Principal Partner of COP26, we want to give people hope by making them aware of the transformational changes taking place in the energy sector as we move towards a clean energy future. Great Britain’s energy system hit a new green record earlier this month with almost 80% of electricity coming from zero carbon sources, and in the last seven years we have cut carbon emissions from the electricity system by 66 per cent.

We know there is still lots to do, but by showing people the progress that’s been made and bringing them together to better understand energy consumption with tools like the Green Light Signal, collectively we can make a real and significant impact in the fight against climate change.”

The LIFX Mini Colour bulb is a compact smart light that is suitable for many fittings within the home and most importantly, intrinsic in helping consumers make smarter energy choices. In addition to being very energy efficient itself, the Mini Colour bulb can now help consumers adjust their energy usage so they are using more clean electricity wherever possible. With the additional help of the LIFX app, consumers can control the bulb from any indoor or outdoor surrounding, helping to ensure that any electricity used is efficient.
