Call of Duty developer Infinity Ward’s Twitter, as it always does before big announcements, has pulled a “Bravo Six going dark” on us, sending all Call of Duty fans across the world into a frenzy of excitement, myself included.

Some fans have spotted the ever cool looking Simon ‘Ghost’ Riley character in the background of the all black Twitter header by brightening the screen, revealing Ghost lurking in the shadows, suggesting that it is indeed Modern Warfare 2 that will be announced.

The game which revolutionized not only the Call of Duty franchise in terms of multiplayer popularity, but also the gaming community as a whole, the original Modern Warfare 2 is arguably one of the most iconic games ever. This game was a trailblazer for trash-talking, trick-shotting and out and out fast paced chaotic Call of Duty fun, with an insanely good roster of guns and maps for multiplayer, along with a sensational and iconic storyline.

If the rumoured upcoming Modern Warfare 2, a supposed sequel to the latest Modern Warfare, can get even a smidgen of the gameplay that the original MW2 gave us, then boy oh boy are we in for a treat. That is a big ‘if’ though, with Call of Duty frankly failing to deliver anything close to the glory days of the original Call of Duty4: Modern Warfare to MW2 and MW3 and then onto the Black Ops series with Black Ops 1 and Black Ops 2 (honourable mention to CoD: Ghosts and CoD: WaW).

With Advanced Warfare being the last CoD game to have a somewhat resounding agreement of it being fun, it is no secret that Call of Duty, Activision and Infinity Ward need a game that gets good reviews from the whole community. A next-gen revamped Modern Warfare 2 game with original maps and guns is a way that would no doubt reconnect me and many other fans who grew up on the original, only if they deliver.

With battle royales and microtransactions being the overlords of shoot-em-up games at the moment, I fear that Activision will fall into that realm with the new Modern Warfare 2. If they take that route, the best way to describe it would be like a restoring your favourite old chair. Yes, a fresh lick of paint and a few new screws here and there will make it more modern but replacing the original scratches and colours that gave your favourite chair its identity removes that homely comfort that made that chair your favourite.

Activision and Infinity Ward need to keep the soul of the original Modern Warfare 2 in their new game to finally get that standout release that they have been searching for ever since 2014.  With that being said, it is always exciting to see a new Call of Duty release and it will be interesting to see what they come up with.
