Nintendo, the creators of the Switch, Wii and many more delivered to us some very exciting news during their Nintendo Direct event, revealing some of the most anticipated games of the year. Here we look at the picks of the bunch!

Nintendo Switch Sports

PREDICTED RELEASE: 29th April 2022

Nintendo Switch Sports is here!

A huge success on the Wii, Nintendo is bringing back the legendary ‘Sports’ series, but this time to the Switch. Featuring all the classic events such as bowling, tennis and sword-fighting, the new Switch Sports game introduces fresh sports, with football (soccer), badminton and volleyball being the 3 main additions. What’s more is this game supports online play, meaning you can finally play tennis or bowling with people all over the world.

Mario Strikers: Battle League Football

PREDICTED RELEASE: June 10th 2022

Another successor of a classic Wii game being refreshed for the Switch, Mario Strikers: Battle League Football brings you a chaotic 5v5 football game featuring all your favourite Mario characters. The previous Mario Strikers Charged on the Wii was hands down one of my favourite games from my childhood, so if this game can somewhat match up to that or even surpass that, we could be looking at one of the most fun games of the year.

Splatoon 3

PREDICTED RELEASE: Summer 2022

Splatoon 3 in-game footage

The highly anticipated 3rd instalment of the popular Splatoon series is finally on its way! Having played Splatoon 2, Splatoon 3 has a lot to live up to. Splatoon 2 was without any doubts one of the best switch games since its release, so fans can only expect an even better version which is a very exciting prospect.

Splatoon is a franchise which I can see going far, so it will be interesting to see what developments it takes over its next few games. The game has also amassed a rather large fanbase over the years, so if there was ever a time to make a game that could propel the franchise, it would be now.

Xenoblade Chronicles 3

PREDICTED RELEASE: September 2022

Bringing together the futures of Xenoblade Chronicles and Xenoblade Chronicles 2, this title will take players to the world of Aionios, home to two hostile nations. This will be the third instalment of the Xenoblade Chronicles series that has been extremely popular since its original release on Nintendo Wii, with the sequel coming out on Wii U.

There has already been a decent level of leaks and information confirmed for the upcoming RPG title, with the game potentially being released at some point over the next year. The game will apparently also contain characters from the first two games, although only the ones who are likely to still be alive at the point in time that the game takes place. Fans of the ongoing series should hopefully be able to get immersed once again into the massive world that is available on the Nintendo Switch.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: DLC Booster Course Pack

PREDICTED RELEASE: 18th March 2022 – 2023

Perhaps one of the biggest announcements from the Nintendo Direct event was the reveal of paid DLC courses for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. The Booster Course pack includes some courses from past Mario Kart games. Eight fresh courses are set to be released over six waves, with the last release coming out in 2023.

It is looking like a total of 48 new courses, which is a serious amount of additional content for a DLC and for only $24.99 (£18.74), it seems like a relatively fair deal. The first course launches on the 18th of March and those who have a paid Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership get the DLC at no extra cost.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land

PREDICTED RELEASE: 25th March 2022

Finally, a new Kirby game! It will be the seventeenth mainline instalment in the Kirby series, as well as the first 3D mainline game in the series, excluding spin-offs, an announcement that will no doubt send fans into a joyful frenzy.

Even if it’s not technically an open-world game, Kirby and the Forgotten Land could easily fit into its own category as a traditional Kirby game with vast levels. Of course, there’s plenty to do in each world, featuring several classic and new Copy Abilities for Kirby to utilize out in the vast, unexplored, and fresh field. This game is definitely one of the games that will be a fun game to switch to when bored, but it will eventually get you addicted.
