Soundpeats are a brand we have provided coverage before mainly for the Free2 Classic model from 2022. Well, we have been sent their newest offering the Soundpeats GoFree 2 which is an affordable pair of open-ear earphones that have a similar build to that of the OneOdio OpenRock Pro.

The price of £69.99 puts these in the same bracket not only of the OpenRock Pro but also the 1More Fit SE S30 which also comes with this open ear design.

Unboxing the headphones and Soundpeats keeps things very simple with just the Earphones inside a charging case and provided is a USB-C charging cable and User Manual.

Design

The Soundpeats GoFree 2 are quite a stylish open ear headphone and they are only available in one colour and that is black. Weight-wise they are only 9 grams per bud meaning you will have a long period of comfort without any ear fatigue.

Selecting the open-ear design with air conduction delivers a natural sound quality as well as allowing in external sounds giving the listener a sense of transparency perfect for when you’re walking down a busy road and you need a sense of alertness in your daily life.

Take a look inside the GoFree 2 and you will notice they are equipped with a 16.2mm bio-membrane speaker and support LDAC, SBC & AAC Codec. The LDAC codec delivers an almost lossless audio quality experience for users.  Soundpeats also provides you with bass enhancement technology that delivers a deeper bass tone, resulting in a more immersive experience.

Moving on to the connectivity of the GoFree2 they offer the user the most current Bluetooth offering 5.3. This is useful for highly stable, low-latency connections. What is also useful is the added Multipoint connectivity allowing you to be paired to your mobile and laptop at the same time so you never miss a beat or that important phone call.

Battery Life

The SoundPeats GoFree 2 come in a lightweight compact matt textured case that can be susceptible to fingerprints. When you consider the price point the fact it’s made of plastic is hardly surprising.

Charging-wise the earphones will support up to 9 hours of battery life and the case itself will give you an additional 35 hours of battery life.

Battery life has been great, and the soft-touch case that houses them is lovely too. It’s bigger than a normal charging case, but somehow smaller than I’d expected. Soundpeats has done a solid job of making the GoFree 2 package as compact but useful as possible.

Controls

The earphones support touch-sensitive controls and they work well enough. Below is a list of controls:

Audio quality

As mentioned the SoundPeats GoFree2 has Bluetooth 5.3 and supports LDAC, SBC & AAC codecs. We have been testing these out for the last few weeks and have been impressed with them considering the cost. You get a decent amount of bass with a clear sound without being hollow.

What you will notice is there is a lack of detail with the treble and this does impact the overall soundstage. Voice isolation is better than expected with the vocals occupying a very centralised spot in my headspace. Overall the GoFree 2 do a decent job of delivering your music and also allows you to hear the world around you when you likely need it the most.

The App

The SoundPeats App is quite basic and provides the user with essential features such as several preset EQs that if we are honest do not sound much different to each other.

There is also a game mode if you need better latency performance.  Last but not least the app also allows for that dual device connection so if you want to link these to your phone & Laptop you could.

Verdict

We have been using the SoundPeats GoFree2 for a few weeks now and have been pleased with the comfort levels. I was also impressed with the overall design that lets you hear the surrounding noise ideal when cycling and you want your senses around you. Not so when you’re sitting on a train and want to turn the outside noise off.

The sound quality is decent considering the price point but the lack of detail does impact the overall soundstage which is a shame. I was also disappointed with the customisable EQ it just did not work and the presets were such slight differences you could barely notice.

Overall, the GoFree2 are a solid set of buds that do deliver they just need a little work in the audio department. I found the design useful when out on my bike in the early morning or late evening. If you are looking for a comfortable, reliable experience and can handle the audio limitations these are a good option to consider as your next purchase.
