In a part of the gaming hardware market long dominated by the giants of PlayStation and Xbox, alternative gaming controllers are a tough thing to get right.

The quality of plastic, feedback from triggers and buttons, the shape and how it feels in your hand; are all things crucial to the success of a controller. The slightest discrepancy in any of these areas can be the difference between the controller that you choose to use every day and the controller you keep at the back of the drawer in case of emergencies.

Luckily, third parties are here breaking the trend and offering good quality disruptors to the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S controllers – at a fraction of the price.

In this review, we’ll be assessing the Trust MUTA Wireless Gaming Controller.

Trust MUTA Wireless Gaming Controller review

First Impressions and Unboxing

The Trust MUTA Wireless Gaming Controller is a rechargeable wireless game controller compatible with Windows, MacOS, Android and the Nintendo Switch. It offers wireless, Bluetooth and wired connection, is made with 75% recycled plastics, and retails for just over the £20 mark.

Inside the box, the wireless controller comes with two extra D-pads, a USB receiver, a USB-C cable, and a user guide.

Holding it for the first time, the first thing I noticed was how light it was. Coming in at 225g, it’s 20% lighter than a PS5 controller despite having similar ergonomics and a similar size.

While that lack of weight can make controllers feel cheap, this doesn’t have that problem. The softer plastic on the handles sit nicely in the hand and the D-pad/YXBA buttons are, to use an incredibly technical term, satisfyingly clicky.

Compatibility and Functionality

The Trust MUTA Wireless Gaming Controller is compatible with PC/Mac, Switch and mobile, though the lack of extra buttons on the back side and lack of turbo mode suggests to me it was made for the more casual Switch/mobile gamer.

In fact, the controller itself is a fairly basic model. That’s not necessarily a bad thing; the stripped-down controller is kept minimalistic without any bells and whistles and will be incredibly easy for anyone to pick up and understand. But it perhaps does lack that extra something to help it stand out.

One nice touch however was the ability to customise the D-pad between three attachments provided. They aren’t huge differences but they do help to make your gaming experience a little more personalised.

My Experience

I used this controller to play Portal (2007) on my Macbook, and Super Mario Odyssey (2017) on the Nintendo Switch.

The fact that it is quite a basic controller makes it hard to pick out details, but it was perfectly functional and responsive, and the vibration and pressure-sensitive triggers certainly help show this is better than the average third-party controller.

Using the Bluetooth connection, I found the battery life to be surprisingly good. It lasted for a couple of hours solid on my Switch before needing to charge the battery, certainly longer than my PS5 controller does. The charge-and-play cable means that battery life will rarely be a noticeable factor anyway, providing a seamless experience when gaming at your desk or on the go.

Final thoughts and verdict

Retailing at just over £20 ($25) at the time of writing, the Trust MUTA Wireless Gaming Controller is a reliable controller at almost a third of the price of PlayStation/Xbox/Switch controllers.

The Trust Muta vs the PS5 Controller

What it perhaps lacks in personality and flashy features it certainly makes up for in its attention to functionality and ease-of-use. You’re not going to see it in the hands of professional Call of Duty players any time soon, but it acts as a solid accompaniment to your Switch set-up or as an accessory for your mobile gaming sessions.

All in all, the Trust MUTA Wireless Gaming Controller sits at a great price point and is a worthy choice for anyone looking to play games casually on their PC/Mac, Switch or mobile. It may not blow your mind, but it certainly won’t let you down.
