If you are like me and are happily married you will notice you seem to have an ever-growing amount of candles around the house and some never even get lit. In fact, since I got married I have more candles than mates!

For the candles that do get lit, we normally use a match which is a race against time to light the wick before the flame gets close to your fingers. So when Zippo approached me to review their rechargeable candle lighter my wife was all for it.

Who is Zippo?

This brand is a very recognisable brand due to there cigarette lighters that you will find in most shops. The brand started back in the 1930s in Bradford, Pennsylvania. Its creator was George Blaisdell who saw a gap in the market to make the traditional Austrian made lighter and easier to use.

In 1932 he went about redesigning the lighter into a fabricated rectangular case. Which had a lid with a hinge that had that chimney design which protected the flame and was operated with one hand and the Zippo lighter was born.

Fast forward to the present day and it’s not just the Zippo lighter they created in the early 2000s, but also the Zippo candle lighter which is a previous model of the rechargeable candle lighter we have to review. However, Zippo lighters and candle lighters are not the only products they make in fact they also produce hand warmers which we will also be reviewing soon.

First Impressions

The Zippo rechargeable candle lighter does not require any butane or refilling as it’s a single-beam lighter that you simply charge up with a USB cable and it’s ready to be used as and when you require.  The fact it does not need gas to light means it’s actually better for the environment.

You will also notice that this candle lighter comes with a single beam that offers a windproof arc meaning you can also use it outside when lighting birthday candles or bug-repellant candles in the summer months.

The Zippo rechargeable candle lighter costs £35.95 which is budget-friendly and comes in 3 colour options:

  • Rose Gold
  • Pebble (Grey)
  • Candy Apple Red

Design

This rechargeable candle lighter has a rugged metal construction with a flexible neck. The neck has a brushed chrome finish and its flexible neck is quite good for lighting a variety of candles or burners.

The body is a bit larger measuring 10.2 x 0.85 x 0.73 inches (HxW D). The rear of the body has a single soft touch ignition and on the front, you have a silver slide switch that you need to move forward at the same time as pressing the ignition button. Then a single plasma arc beam will appear and you can light the candle. The reason behind this design is simply for child safety.

When it’s time to recharge you will notice a USB port on the side of the body and charging will take about 90 minutes and can be done by the provided micro-USB cable. There is also a LED on the side near the USB port to indicate its charging. On a single charge expect about 50 uses of this device before it needs recharging.

Performance

The Zippo rechargeable candle lighter is really easy to operate and you will be able to do both at the same time using the same hand. You will then see the arc at the end of the flexible neck produce a purple-like laser that you simply put on the wick of the candle and it will light the candle.

It’s that easy we recorded a little video to show you how to light your candle.

Verdict

The Zippo rechargeable candle lighter is such a game changer and moving forward I will stay away from matches or even gas lighters alike, as a result, which will benefit the environment as well.

When asking my wife what her feedback was after using the candle lighter she said the flexible neck was a big bonus if you were going to light a lantern sometimes the position of where the candle sits is tricky to get to and with the flexible neck it’s done in no time.

The only negative I have with the Zippo rechargeable candle lighter is it may result in my wife buying more candles, do I really need the living room smelling more of prosecco and juniper or wild fig?

Overall this candle lighter comes at an affordable price and is easy to use so there really is nothing bad to say about this. I found the windproof feature a real benefit. In fact, it’s crazy to think that we did not buy one sooner.
