Portable power stations are becoming increasingly popular in recent years for a wide range of uses. They are popular with campers and people that have offgrid lifestyles, such as van and boat lifers.

They are also popular within the home, providing an easy way to power appliances without being close to a mains socket. They are particularly important for people that use medical devices such as CPAP machines, as they will continue running in the event of a power failure.

They are ideal for powering small electronics such as phones, tablets, and cameras, and can even be used to jump-start a car.

Portable power stations come in a variety of sizes and capacities. On the affordable end of the spectrum, you have power stations with a capacity of 240Wh, and these tend to be small and quite portable, ideal for powering phones and laptops on long trips.

Capacities of 500Wh to 1kWh seem to be the best option for most buyers. They offer a good balance of affordability, portability, capacity and peak output.

With so many options to choose from, it can be difficult to know which one is the best.

To help you make an informed decision, James from Mighty Gadget has compiled a list of the best portable power stations with at least 500Wh capacity available to buy in the UK on Amazon.co.uk.

One thing to consider when buying is if it is a portable power station with a LiFePO4 battery. These newer batteries will typically last over 2000 charges before the battery capacity depletes by 20%. If you are a very heavy user, you should get a LiFePO4 model, but for occasional use, a Li-ion NMC battery will still last many years.

  • ECOFLOW RIVER 2 MAX: This is the latest release from ECOFLOW and uses LiFePO4 battery cells, allowing it to be charged 3000 times before hitting 80%. That’s almost 10 years of regular use. You have two UK sockets, 3xUSB-A and a single USB-C with 100W output. The power station will charge at 660W from the mains, and the USB-C can act as an input with a 100W capacity. You can also use solar panels for a 220W Max input and the EcoFlow 220W Bifacial Solar Panel is an excellent choice for this.

  • BLUETTI EB55: This portable power station offers 537Wh of capacity using a LiFePO4 with 2,500+ life cycles to 80%. It has four USB-A ports, one 100W USB-C port, one 12V DC port, and two UK sockets. There is 200W mains charging, and 200W solar input, and these can be combined for 400W total input.

  • ALLPOWERS S700 Portable Power Station: This portable power station packs a lot of power into a compact and lightweight package with a 606WH capacity. It has three USB-A ports, one 100W USB-C ports, two mains sockets.

  • Jackery Explorer 500: The is a 518Wh lithium portable power station. It is one of the lightest and most portable rechargeable lithium battery generators on the market. It has three USB-A ports, one 12V DC port, and one UK outlet. It also features a built-in LCD display that shows the power output and other important information. This uses the slightly older Li-ion NMC battery which can do 500 cycles before hitting 80%+ capacity. Overall

There are a growing number of brands that sell portable power stations on Amazon. However, there are only a handful of reputable brands, this includes ECOFLOW, Jackery, Anker, BLUETTI and ALLPOWERS.

The other brands will probably be fine but are only worth it if they are significantly cheaper. You should weigh up your needs when buying. A LiFePO4 battery will last many years but may not be necessary if you are only using it a few times per year. Newer power stations have USB-C with up to 100W output, which is ideal for charging laptops.

You should also look at the peak output. Most of these will be around 500W output, but the BLUETTI EB55 can do 700W, allowing it to run more devices or more power devices at once.
