When I was at school all I ever wanted to do was be able to write with a fountain pen as they scream history and style. Unfortunately being left-handed I would put too much pressure on a pen like that and they would not last long.

Move forward to the present day and Adonit has brought the fountain pen back to the 21st-century sort of…. Now most of us will only use an Apple pencil as a way of writing notes but the Apple Pencil can be a little costly to buy. In this review, we have been testing the new Adonit Star stylus that brings the style of a fountain pen but with the technology of an onscreen writing tool.

Adonit Star Stylus Pen review

First Impressions

The Adonit Star currently costs £49 from Amazon and comes in a classic black and silver combination and is the closest I have seen a stylus look like a real pen. The Adonit Star is compatible with only Apple tablets such as the following:

  • iPad Air (3rd/4th/5th Gen)
  • iPad mini (5th/6th Gen)
  • iPad (6th/7th/8th/9th/10th Gen)
  • iPad Pro 11″ (1st/2nd/3rd/4th Gen)
  • iPad Pro 12.9″ (3rd/4th/5th/6th Gen) and newer

Design

The Adonit star has a broader body compared to an Apple Pencil making it more comfortable and substantial in the hand. The Pen cap has a classic metal trim and has three rings around the cap with some branding on the thicker ring.

The Adonit Star Stylus also comes with a metal pen clip just like a classic fountain pen which you could clip pen to your backpack or you could even clip to a shirt pocket as they did in the 90s.

Unscrewing the bottom of the pen shows the user the USB-C charging port and the pen comes with 11 hours of use before charging which takes just 1 hour to fully charge. The only difference between the Adonit Star and an Apple Pencil is the Adonit model is not wireless charging compatible.

Just below where the USB- Port is positioned there is a small button and pressing this will power up the Adonit star. When powered up you will see a small LED light that will indicate the pen is ready to be used.

Now the star of the show is when you remove that pen cap to reveal the stylus tip which has been designed to look like a fountain pen tip. This is a real USP of this Stylus pen and really makes it stand out from the crowd.

Features

Apart from the pen styled on a fountain pen Adonit keeps the palm rejection feature we have seen in many of there previous models we have reviewed. As I am left-handed I found this feature especially useful as when writing I tend to drag my hand across as a write. This feature was really helpful and I was very impressed.

Verdict

We have been using the Adonit Star for a couple of weeks now and found the pen to be easy to use, and very responsive when writing on my iPad. The experience of using a stylus pen that looks like a fountain pen is I can use this without the pressure that the tip will break.  The overall feel of the pen in your hand when writing really does get you as close as it would be to write with a fountain pen and paper.

If you consider the cost for example an Apple Pencil 2nd Gen is being retailed for £129 on Amazon compared to the Adonit Star which only costs £49. So you are a little budget conscious this pen ticks that box. Also, the Adonit star provides that fountain pen style which in the stylus market is very unique.

The downside to the Adonit Star is the lack of wireless charging but the fact it will be fully charged by the USB-C port in 1 hour and then provide you with 11 hours of battery life is not a bad thing at all. That aside the lack of Bluetooth pairing means you can use the pen quicker compared to pairing an Apple Pencil.

The benefits include the precision of the Adonit Star and paired with the palm rejection feature this is perfect for a left-hander like me who may want to write notes without making a right mess. So if you’re looking for a unique-looking stylus that is a fraction of the cost compared to the Apple Pencil 2nd Gen and wants something that provides a good level of comfort and allows for fluid writing on your iPad with a classic feel this is the stylus for you.
