Edifier is a brand we know very well after reviewing several products they have such as the Edifier W320TN, Edifier 820NB Plus and even the Edifier NeoBuds S. In this review, we are focusing on the latest offering the NeoBuds Pro 2 which cost £129.99 and are available in two colours – Black or Ivory.

First Impressions

Edifier has always been a brand that wants to offer us value for money in the products they produce and the NeoBuds Pro 2 do not disappoint with features such as:

  • ANC
  • Hi-Res Audio
  • Bluetooth 5.3
  • IP54 dust and Splash Proof
  • Spatial Audio
  • Wearing detection
  • The Edifier App
  • 22 Hour Battery Life (ANC off)

We have been using these for the last few weeks and if I had to pick a fault it would be the battery life, especially with ANC switched on the 22 hours I mentioned above dropped down to 16 hours which broke down further and gives you 4 hours in a single charge with 12 hours stored in the charging case.

When you listen with the ANC switched on and are walking down a busy road you will notice just how good the ANC performs. We were very impressed with the amount of unwanted noise that is blocked from affecting what you are listening to.

If you take a look inside the Neobuds Pro 2 you are given a 10mm dynamic driver as well as a balanced armature driver helping keep the sound balanced. More on the sound quality later this this review.

Design

The Edifier Neobuds Pro 2 are designed with the same sci-fi style and alongside the buds you are provided with a fairly large charging case that you will notice if you place in the pocket of your jeans.

The charging case is quite simple in design with just the gold logo on the top and the name Edifer printed on the rear of the case just above the USB-C charging port. There is also a small LED on the front KnightRider-style. The app allows you to select from 8 colours.

The earbuds themselves are fairly large in the ear but this is beneficial as the tips ensure a well-balanced design meaning they fit snugly in the ear and remove any concerns they could fall out when am cycling or when I hit the gym.

The earbuds offer touch control via several short or long presses. You are given controls such as:

  • Play/Pause
  •  ANC on or ambient mode
  •  call controls
  •  Skip track
  •  Change sound mode from – Music, Game and spatial audio.

Features

The Edifier NeoBuds Pro 2 offer auto-pause music overwise known as wear detection. If you remove one or both buds your music will automatically pause and put the bud back in and it restarts the music. I found testing this feature to be very accurate which pleased me as dont you just hate it when you need to speak to someone but the music keeps playing.

The NeoBuds Pro 2 do not offer multipoint support so you can’t use these on 2 devices at once. What you do have however is Bluetooth 5.3 which helped prevent any unwanted dropouts even at London Liverpool Street which is normally a place buds cut out on me but this did not happen with the NeoBuds Pro 2 they continued to entertain.

The last feature to mention is the Edifier app which allows you to adjust the levels of ANC, Switch off wear detection and allowing you to adjust the EQ. You can even change the colour of the LED on the charging case if you wish.

Battery Life

The Edifier NeoBuds Pro 2 offers 22 hours of battery life when ANC is switched off but switch ANC on and you get a total level of 16 hours. Unfortunately, this just feels a little short compared to rival brand’s offerings at a similar price point.

If you are only using these buds for travelling to work or hitting the gym they should give you a decent mileage but if you are like me and like to listen to the buds for most of the day the low amount of battery life in a single charge might put some users off. However, If you did need to give them a quick charge the buds come with a fast charging option which means 15 minutes of charge gives you 2 hours of playback.

Sound Quality/ANC

When you consider what is the star of the show when you consider the NeoBuds Pro 2 it has to be the ANC. In our testing, we were very impressed with the ANC, I work near Liverpool St station which is normally a very busy area but the ANC in these buds easily cancelled out that noise to make it a very low unnoticeable sound while you listen to your favourite song.

The Edifier app also allows you to select the noise-cancellation modes from a higher level to a milder level or even ambient mode. You can also select the wind reduction mode if you are going out for a walk and it is a little windy the buds won’t be affected.

How do they sound?

I have been testing these for the last few weeks and you won’t be unhappy with the overall sound. Mids are crisp and the highs come with plenty of detail. The bass is not overboard it offers a punchy but smooth offering this was practically noticeable on the track “No Roots by Alice Merton”.

You can make some adjustments via the app for example you want to add an extra level to the bass this is possible. If we had to find fault we would say the soundstage needs to be a little wider but that is being picky.

If you want Hi-Res audio support you will be pleased that Edifier offer you LHDC 5.0 HD codec which will improve the overall sound you receive.

Verdict

If you are looking for a pair of earbuds to spend some of that Christmas money you will notice the Neobuds Pro 2 are very competitively priced. The ANC is the star of the show with multiple settings so you can select the setting you want and get listening. Speaking of sound you get just the right level of bass and the mids and highs all work together to provide a great sound.

Unfortunately, they are not perfect the battery life will be with you for your trip to work and back but for anything longer distance they just fall short. The other issue a buyer might notice is the lack of wireless charging it feels like a missed opportunity here.

Apart from that if you can look past the chunky charging case the NeoBuds Pro 2 offer quality audio paired with features like ANC, Spatial Audio and Hi-Res audio support you are getting an excellent value for money offering here.
