Edifier is a well-known audio brand and here at What Gadget we have reviewed many items from the brand such as Edifier W820NB Plus, Edifier MR4 Monitor Speakers & Edifier W240TN ANC In-Ear Headphones.

The latest we have been sent is the Edifier W230TN which is a pair of TWS that offer long periods of comfort paired with some cool features.

First Impressions

They currently cost £99 via Amazon and you get the following features:

  • Available in 2 colour options Grey or Ivory
  • Open Fit Design
  • Adaptive ANC
  • Hi-Res Audio Support and LDAC Codec
  • 6 built-in mics and AI algorithms for making calls.
  • 27.5 hours of Battery Life with Fast charging feature – 10 minutes charge to get 1 hour of playtime.
  • Dual Connections – You can switch between two devices effortlessly.

The main feature of these is that ANC capability without the need for the buds to go deep in your ear canal. The open-fit design is similar to Apple’s EarPods but the W230TN’s provide long periods of comfortable and fatigue-free listening.

The Edifier W230TN offer a budget-friendly option that will tick boxes for someone who just wants to chill listening to music, a travel commuter or someone looking for both style and substance in their next pair of earbuds. Let’s take a deeper look at how I got to this verdict.

Design

The Edifier W320TN are very lightweight at only 50 grams with the case included. The buds themselves are even lighter at only 4 grams.

Edifier keeps things simple the charging case has a single LED on the front and a USB-C port on the rear. There is also a single button that is dual purpose allowing the user to multi-pair or reset the earbuds.

Opening and closing the case is well constructed and they provided a secure closure that survived the shake test. This is due to the inside of the case the buds are held firmly in place by some small magnets ensuring they won’t rattle around when you are on the move. There are also some pogo pin connectors ensuring a snug fit when in the case and allowing them to charge.

Moving on to the earbuds themselves they are made from high-quality plastic. The open fit has been selected for comfort and users will benefit from the lack of discomfort even after long periods of extended use. The stem design of these buds adds to the secure fit and comfort and the stems also house the charging contacts and three built-in microphones to aid voice calls in each bud. The built-in mics also use AI algorithms to enhance call quality and filter out background noise which works to a degree is not perfect but did reduce a good percentage of unwanted noise.

The buds are also equipped with an infrared sensor that detects when they are in your ears and allow for automatic play/pause ideal so you dont miss the song or podcast you are listening to. They also come with pressure-based touch controls that require a bit more force to get them to be responsive but I have no issue with this it prevents accidental touches.

The buds are also excellent for hitting the gym or getting caught in the rain as they are sweat and dust-resistant due to the fact they are IP54-rated.

Features

The Edifier W320TN works with the connect app and this app helps enhance the overall experience by providing customization for example:

  • Touch Control Sensitivity Adjustments
  • EQ Presets such as Classic, Pop or Rock

The app also allows you to switch on the ANC technology which reduces background noise making them ideal for a noisy office or busy street. As mentioned the ANC is not the best on the market but it does a decent job of reducing unwanted noise.

The built-in Mics with ANC also provide noise cancellation when on the phone to receive clear quality calls even when the environment is a little loud. This feature ensures your calls are understood without any background noise causing any unwanted interference.

Other features include the most up-to-date Bluetooth offering 5.3 which offers a stable connection regardless of where you are and even offers a distance of 10 meters.

Sound Quality

The Edifier W320TN are equipped with 13mm dynamic drivers and they have been finely tuned to deliver a rich and detailed sound. The W320TN use LDAC & SBC codec that offers a high-res wireless audio certification that elevates the audio quality significantly.

Using the LDAC codec you will notice highs become more detailed, vocals sound clearer without being too harsh and the bass retains a good level of power and depth. Now this will be more noticeable when listening to Hi-Res music on Tidal. However, listening to YouTube or Spotify it might not be as noticeable.

There is also a gaming mode with an 80ms low latency pair with the 13mm dynamic drivers and you get a good level of sound emphasising the midrange for clear and forward vocals. The bass carries a noticeable punch however this is at the expense of the treble which does tend to hide in the background.

Battery Life

The Edifier W320TN ticks most boxes but the battery life is an area for improvement with the use of both the ANC and LDAC codec they tend to drain the battery life. If you have both on and volume at 80% you will only get about 3.5 hours of playback on a single charge with an additional 14 hours from the charging case.

However, if you switch to the SBC codec and turn the ANC off you will then notice the battery life will increase to a more respectable 5 hours and 30 minutes in a single charge. Fear not as the charging case provides an additional 22 hours of battery life. When it’s time to charge the earbuds takes a full hour to go from 0 to 100%. There is also a 10-minute fast charge feature that will give you a quick boost.

Verdict

The Edifier W320TN offers a decent audio experience when you consider the price tag and the preconceptions about open-fit earbuds. I was impressed with the inclusion of LDAC codec support they provide an enjoyable listening experience.

The Edifier W320TN will offer long periods of listening pleasure and they sound great the only slight issue is the battery life but if you want LDAC codec and ANC technology expect the battery to be the victim here. That to one side, if you want strong audio, ANC and customizable controls make these a solid choice for those who value touch controls, comfort and decent sound quality in your next pair of TWS.
