Looking to create an immersive viewing experience with colour-coordinated lights behind your TV then check out the latest from Nanoleaf.

Me and my wife are big movie fans and she is a big Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter fan. I have to say the latest from Nanoleaf the 4D Screen Mirror and Lightstrip kit really did take watching a film to a whole new level.

When we set this up the colours of lava from Mount Doom poured onto the wall behind my TV really did pop and take our watching to another level. This is all down to two things a small camera hanging over my 65-inch TV and a light strip that is wrapped around the back of the TV.

First Impressions

We have been sent the Nanoleaf 4D Kit which is available in 2 sizes:

  • Up to 65 inch – £71.99
  • Up to 85 inch – £95.99

In this kit are both the 4D screen Mirror and Lightstrip that are paired together using an included controller box.  The provided camera captures the colours onscreen and then reflects them on the light strip to create a backlight display.

You will be impressed that it’s just an external camera with no cords connecting to the TV and reacted fast with what film we had on the TV.

How does it work?

The Nanoleaf 4D Kit is very easy to set up first up is the camera which you can either hook onto the top of the TV pointing down like we have or you can place it below the TV pointing upwards ideal if your TV is on a stand and not on the wall like ours. The only thing is you will notice if the camera can be a little bit of an eye sore if positioned pointing down.

The Lightstrip as mentioned comes in two sizes we have the 65-inch which is handy as that is the size of my TV. If you have a smaller TV you can trim the strip which is useful to know. ( Just make sure you trip from the true end).

To connect to your TV the lightstrip comes with a tape backing and 4 rounded corner pieces you can stick to the back of the TV this helps keep it in place and bend the lightstrip.

Once set up simply plug the light strip and camera into the controller box and then plug in the box into a power source. You will need to download the Nanoleaf app unless you already have it from products such as the Nanoleaf Lines, and Nanoleaf Squares we have reviewed previously.

Then you will get a preview of what the camera sees which will depend on where you have placed the camera in our case we placed the camera above the screen. The app then displays a moveable polygon that you can adjust and then uses mappable LED lights to ask you to confirm where each corner of the lightstrip is.

The setup screen on the app shows you everything the camera sees and then the camera comes with a useful magnet cover when the camera is not in use.

The benefit of using this kit is there is no software or connections to the TV saving you on using a port or trying to navigate the Sony software on our TV. It’s also useful if you want to use this on a PC screen and enhance your gaming experience.

When you are screen mirroring the Nanoleaf app allows you 4 different settings:

  • 1D
  • 2D
  • 3D
  • 4D

Each one amps up the colour variety more from what it’s capturing on the screen and this then reflects onto the colours of the lightstrip. The 1D & 2D options are more one-note and allow you to select a main colour to reflect. If you select 3D or 4D that is more for a vibrant variety of colours more suited when watching a film compared to just a TV show.

We were very impressed with how quickly the colours would change and react to the film we watched. I would expect the same to be said when gaming. We were also pleased that the Nanoleaf 4D kit was not too distracting. In fact, it enhanced my viewing experience.

When watching Lord of the Rings – Return of the King the Nanoleaf 4D Kit really did make our watching experience pop and the dark reds in the film were enhanced tenfold.

Below is a video of the Nanoleaf 4D Kit in action:

The app also comes with a variety of preset scenes that you can just use with the lightstrip and without the screen mirror. This is great if you want some nice background ambience. They can also react to music if your music player is close to the TV & controller box.

The Nanoleaf 4D Kit can also use Sync+ to have your other Nanoleaf products all reflect the same colours as the lightstrip kit. I would say this is more suited to a gaming set-up.

Verdict

If you are looking to enhance your film-watching or gaming experience Nanoleaf is one of the brands that with their smart lighting products can do just that.

Price-wise it’s not as expensive as you might think and if you already have the lightstrip then the camera is only £55.99 compared to the full kit of £71.99.

I was also impressed that Nanoleaf kept with the smart home compatibility that other products of theirs have. So if you have Amazon Alexa, Google Home or even Apple HomeKit you be directed to connect the kit by scanning the code. However, connecting to Alexa or Google does take a little more effort.

So if you want to enhance your TV room with some smartlighting or add to your gaming setup this budget-friendly product does just that.
