According to a recent survey by the Oral Health foundation the average Brit spends over £200 on looking after their smile by purchasing oral health care products.  So when we got the opportunity to test the Oclean X Pro Elite I was interested to see how making my toothbrush smart would make a difference to my everyday oral health practices.

First Impressions

Costing £110 via Amazon this is a significant investment compared to my normal toothbrush which cost around £5 or the Oral-B Vitality Plus electric toothbrush which currently retails at £20. However, when you do some research in the smart toothbrush market is very reasonably priced considering Oral-B iO9 costs £250.

The Oclean X Pro Elite is a well designed and very quiet toothbrush compared to the Oral-B alternative. The design is very 21st century and it comes with a touchscreen menu to select the perfect settings to brush your teeth.

When I checked out the Oclean app that comes with this brush it did blow your brain with the number of options this toothbrush offers to make a simple routine rather complicated. We found the brushing instructions a little difficult to understand and the offer to create a custom bushing plan a little over the top.

Design

The Oclean X Pro Elite is only available in one colour and that is a light grey which is paired with a textured finish which is useful if you had wet hands when using the brush.

The brush has one single button that powers up and powers down the brush. After that, you have the touchscreen display which is in colour and this is where you can move through the various modes to get that perfect brushing experience.

I found navigating using the touch screen rather difficult as the touchscreen took some getting used to as it was not recognising my swipes. However, when given to my wife she managed to navigate with ease.

Once you have selected the setting to start brushing you will get a timer as it’s advised you to brush the top for 2 minutes and then the bottom for a further 2 minutes. It’s a nice idea but in the practical use of this brush, it’s very difficult to see the timer when brushing.

This brush also comes with a wireless charging base which is a massive improvement from the normal way you normally charge an electric toothbrush. Most regular electric toothbrushes have that recess in the base of the brush that fits on a pronged base. The issue with this method is that the base of the brush can collect toothpaste residue. The Oclean X Pro Elite has solved this common issue. The brush no longer has that recess; it’s completely flat.

The charger has a small silicone cup that the brush sits in and starts the wireless charging and if you need to clean the base it’s simple to do so. The charger comes with a USB port instead of the normal shaver socket which might annoy some people but I did not see this as a major issue as I normally charge my electric toothbrush in the bedroom.

Oclean also provides you with a useful magnetic mount that you can attach your brush to the bathroom wall. The mount uses an adhesive pad to fix on the wall then the magnetic mount will hold the brush and give you a little more room by your sink if space is an issue.

Performance

The Oclean X Pro Elite works very well at its max setting; it can offer a vibration of up to 42,000 times a minute. You might also expect the brush would be noisy but you’re wrong it’s dead silent even when vibrating.

The brush also comes with its own app but more on that later in the review. The brush can also be used without the app which some might say is a blessing as the app requires a dental degree to be able to use it.

When using the brush without the app and just by the touchscreen you have four modes to select from:

  • Clean
  • Sensitive
  • Massage
  • White

You can also adjust the intensity level from 1 to 4 plus select the duration you brush for.  Once you get used to the level of sensitivity of the touch screen it’s actually quite easy to use.

Using the toothbrush on white mode provides a fairly moderate intensity and provided a thorough clean but at the same time, the brush keeps the noise level to a minimum meaning you won’t disturb anyone in your house who may have gone to bed before you.

The Oclean App

What makes this toothbrush smart is the fact it works with a mobile app that is available to download on either IOS or Android phones. The set-up is not difficult simply download the app, set up an account and click on the confirmation email. One thing to be aware of is just keeping the brush in the charging holder when downloading the app. The reason for this is the brush may switch off mid setup which means it will just take longer to set up plus you need to pair the brush with the app.

Once set up the app looks great but it’s packed with features some I just do not see the point of having such as changing the background on the app.  The app offers dedicated brushing plans and 12 different presets such as-

  • Standard Cleaning
  • Gentle teeth spa
  • Newbie Whitening
  • Braces Cleaning

If this did not make you think it was a little over the top by pressing smart push you will then be required to enter details about your lifestyle which would indicate a particular setting.

Now here is where a degree in dentistry comes in handy. The plan you are given provides instructions on how to brush your teeth and which areas. You are greeted with areas such as the right palate side. You also get something called a dedicated zone which has left me a little puzzled. Now to follow the plan you need your phone handy as the app will show you which area to brush and when and the indication you need to move to the area is by the change in brush vibration.

Not happy with the plan selected you can create your own plan in terms of how long you want to brush each area of your mouth with a massive 32 intensity settings.

Now the brush also includes an accelerometer which is designed to monitor its position in your mouth as you clean but it’s not in real-time and only presents you with a report of your brushing efforts including a map of areas brushed it will even give you a brushing score. If you’re competitive like me it creates a competition to do it better next time. If you tap on the question mark next to coverage it will indicate what you have brushed. The areas indicated in red mean you need to put more focus on that area.

Verdict

The Oclean X Pro Elite is quite unique toothbrush as you can use the brush without the app which still comes with a nice amount of features via the touchscreen and is a near-silent toothbrush.

Where this toothbrush comes into its own is the use of the app that helps you set a routine and also helps if you miss a particular spot when brushing the app takes your cleaning routine up a notch but it can be tricky to fully understand all the features.

The real negative I see from this brush is the built-in accelerometer that tracks the position you clean your teeth but as mentioned it does not provide the data in real-time, unlike the Oral-B i09. The information is only provided after you have finished so it’s hard to adjust your technique as you brush but will provide you information for next time to improve.

The Oclean X Pro Elite is a well-designed toothbrush but I would have liked for two heads to have been included. The App is a little over the top in my opinion I feel like to get the full benefit you need to be a dentist.

However, if you just want to use the brush without the app it would be something am sure you will find useful especially with the features via the touchscreen on the brush moving it into the premium eclectic toothbrushes in the market. However, if you want to get all technical the app being complicated might put off some users. If Oclean fixes the app and makes it a little less complicated they could be on to a real game-changer.
