In the summer months, most of us spent many an evening out in the garden enjoying our garden with friends and you might want to decorate your garden with solar fairy lights as they charge up on sunlight and cost you nothing to run.

In this review, we were approached by solar light brand Ollny and asked to review the LED warm white solar string lights. Now Ollny offers a range of solar lights from the 180 LED 60ft option we are reviewing to the 240 LED option and the 300 LED option. Now the solar lights come in the following colours:

  • Warm White
  • Cool White
  • Multicolour

Who is Ollny?

The brand Ollny was created by Sylvia Lin in 2016 after being inspired to create decorative lights for the entertaining space in your garden with innovative ideas.  Ollny has a wide range of lights from curtain and net lights to icicle and string lights.  They have created lights with multiple function flashing modes and they are powered by adapters, battery boxes and solar energy.

 First impressions

The Ollny 60ft warm white solar straight lights come with a total of 180 LED fairy lights on a 60ft string that is powered by a robust solar panel that has a large battery built-in. The lights come with 3 timer settings and multiple light settings.

Unboxing

The box the Ollny lights come in is a very simple cardboard packaging with the Ollny logo and the strapline “Light up the Joy of life” apart from that the packaging is very simple in design.

Inside the packaging, you have the lights with a connected solar panel that has a built-in battery and controls on the base of the battery. In addition to that, you also have a panel mount and ground spike and manual.

Design

We have bought solar lights before and after the initial excitement that generally leads to disappointment due to the fact they are poorly made. With the Ollny lights they are built with more care the light string is insulated making it a more robust set.

The connected solar panel is fairly large (4.5 x 3.7 inches H x W) and fully recharges the battery in 6 hours in sunlight its recommended you charge these fully before set up to make sure all the lights are in working order. Once charged they will provide lights for up to 18 hours. Depending on how long the timer is set you should be ok even with a cloudy day the battery should still give you light in the evening. The lights are also IP67 rated meaning they are waterproof so rain will not affect them extra useful considering how much rain the UK gets in the winter months.

The solar panel houses the battery and if you lift the panel over on the base the controls consist of the power button and timer button which also doubles up as the mode button under that is a small LED to indicate which timer is set.

The mode button allows you to scroll through the settings available which are:

  • Steady On
  • In Wave
  • Slo-Glo
  • Sequential
  • Chasing flash
  • Fade
  • Twinkle flash
  • Combination

You will notice the lights a photocell that turns them on when daylight has ended and the timer you can set for as little as 4 hours and up to 8 hours or you can keep them on until the photocell senses daylight.

Performance

We recently built a new but of trellis in the garden in which we are trying to grow a Bluebell creeper up them and felt having the lights in being blended into the plants would be a nice touch. Installing them around the trellis was easier than if we had the plants already grown on the trellis. Installing the 180 lights was quite easy as it goes.

Once installed you need to position the solar panel we have some railway sleepers positioned behind the trellis so we placed the solar panel on that as it would get a good amount of direct sunlight for at least 6 hours. You are also provided with a mounting spike if you would like to mount the solar panel into the ground. Once set up we selected the 6-hour option paired with the fade option.

As promised when daylight started the fade the solar night kicked into action and we were impressed with the brightness and the entries time the lights were on which really did add to the overall ambience we have in the garden.

Verdict

My wife has a number of different solar lights in the garden and these solar lights from Ollny really did impress us the wires did not break or the LEDs continue to work, unlike other brands we have purchased in the past.  What you get with the Ollny LED 60ft 180 warm white solar lights is something that is well built and very affordable at only £14.99 its really hard to find fault apart from the installation could take some time it’s worth the effort. The user guide is very easy to follow allowing you to change the time they are on and the light setting with ease.

We liked these lights so much that we ordered 2 more sets of the multicolour version in time for Christmas.
