The Twinkly Flex brings a professional neon wall light to your home!

Smart light brand Twinkly we reviewed back at Christmas time with the Twinkly Strings 250 and more recently with the Twinkly Squares that allow you to create some fantastic wall art. Well, we continue the wall art theme with the Twinkly Flex which comes in 2m & 3m options and cost from £79.

The Twinkly Flex is a LED light strip that is wrapped in tough tubing that allows you to bend it into shapes and be flexed to create a series of unique shapes and can be controlled via the Twinkly app and customised with over 16 million colours to pick from.

Unboxing

When you open the Twinkly Flex you will notice it measures 9.8 ft long and is paired with a fairly long cable that needs plugging into a plug socket. Also inside the packaging is a two-sided adhesive which allows you to design a word on the wall like below. There are also some screws to allow you to secure the plastic plates to the wall if the adhesive did not work.

Depending on the location you might find the screws offer that extra level of stability to prevent the shapes you make from falling off the wall.

Set up

Once you have decided if you’re using the two-sided adhesive or provided screws to secure the plastic plates. Twinkly offers some design ideas but coming up with the design you wanted is the hardest thing to do.

Depending on the size of the Flex the 2M (6.5ft) or 3M (9.8ft) might be a little limiting in terms of the shape you make. What you can do is buy multiple Flex strips and connect them together via the app.

Twinkly App

If like us you have used the Twinkly app you will know just how easy it is to use the app. Set-up instructions are very easy to follow, once you have connected the Twinkly Flex to your home Wi-Fi. Once connected you will need to map the Twinkly Flex using your phone’s camera. This process only takes a few seconds but it’s vital when you select any of the preset colour effects as some are reliant on the direction.

The app allows you to select a large range of lighting effects you really are spoilt for choice from just a standard colour to unique lighting effects that display multiple colours you can even use the app to set up a schedule. As mentioned you will spend hours going through the colour display options or you can even create your own colour display.

The Twinkly Flex also comes with support from your smart assistant for example Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant. This lets you incorporate the lights into your smart home schedule and you can also ask Alexa to turn the lights on/off. Away on holiday, not an issue you can even set them to switch on all via your smart assistant.

Performance

We have been using the Twinkly Flex and Dots for a few weeks now and also have the Twinkly strings we use for Christmas. I have always been pleased with the performance of these products. The Flex is encased in a tube which means the lights won’t be offering overwhelming intensity in fact they disperse the light evenly providing the right amount of light at any one time.

The Flex really shines when the sun goes down and the lights really do draw attention and deliver the right level of intensity and ambience for any room.

Verdict

When considering the price of Twinkly products has always been an issue for me, especially the Twinkly Squares. However, considering what you are getting with the Twinkly Flex is not terrible on the value for money front with the 2M option costing £99 or the 3M costing £129.  This product is unique on the market and the Twinkly app allows you to create eye-catching effects and designs.  If I had to pick a fault it was the 2M option is a little short especially when making word shapes from the lights.

Twinky Flex review

In terms of what else is on the market the closest to the Twinkly Flex would be the Nanoleaf Lines or even Nanoleaf Elements which are also LED wall panels but are more expensive and less flexible compared to the Flex.

In terms of longevity, the Twinkly Flex should provide you with up to 30,000 hours which is fantastic value for money you also get 1 years warranty and the Flex is rugged enough for you to change into a new shape a few times.

Is it worth buying?

I would say if you are looking to add a little extra sparkle to a room that will be a conversation starter these are definitely in that category. I was also impressed with how easily they connect to the app and just how many colour combinations, preset patterns and the fact you can set up schedules for different patterns to be used when they are switched on.  I was also impressed with the smart home compatibility and how easily they fit into your smart home set-up.

So if you are looking to add some smart lighting to a room either your home office or create a centrepiece in the living room then I highly recommend the Twinkly Flex.
