Looking for a subtle lighting decoration to add ambience to any room and kit out your gaming room create the vibe with Twinkly Dots.

If you’re looking to add a little sparkle you might consider smart lights but with the market packed with brands offering the latest such as Govee, Tapo, Philips, Nanoleaf and Twinkly you really are spoilt for choice. In this review are we focusing on Twinkly Dots.

The Twinkly Dots come in 3 sizes:

400 LEDs – £174

200 LEDs – £114

60 LEDs- £45

In this review we have been lucky to have been sent the 200 LED option and when you consider the price point is over the £100 mark what makes these worth the investment?

Design

The Twinkly Dots as with all the products I have reviewed from this brand offer that premium feel which is expected considering they are at the high end when you consider the price. The cord itself comes in two colours you can purchase black or white and the review sample we have is the black cable option. The cord is quite narrow and each dot is a diffuser and quite small in size with an LED in each.

I decided to wrap my computer desk in the lights and found the narrow cord helpful to be helpful to pull the cord tightly around the poles that make my computer desk and it did not slip once put in place.

The Twinkly Dots also come with an IP44 rating so even thou they are generally used indoors you could use them to cover your front door. In terms of the power supply, they use the same screw-in design that makes it even more secure compared to a standard plug on a normal pair of lights.

Set up

If you have purchased a set of Twinkly stings you will notice how easy the set-up is but if this is the first time you need to make sure you download the Twinkly app which is available on both iOS & Android users. Once downloaded the instructions are very simple to follow and you can connect via Wi-Fi but it’s possible to use Bluetooth. You then need to name the lights and give them a test before placing them in the design you want.

Once set up you need to use your phone to scan them to create a 3D representation of the design via the app. This can be a little tricky if you have wrapped the lights around the computer stand and certain parts are not normally on display. I have seen these lights cover a set of mirrors or around a 4 poster bed and expect the scan to be much easier. The 200 Light option will give you 33 feet to play with so you can cover all around a room depending on its size if it.

Just like other models from Twinkly, they can display 16 million different colours so the options are endless via the app.

The Twinkly App

If you have used the Twinkly app as I have you will notice how simple the layout of the app is with just a few tabs to select:

  • Controls
  • Gallery
  • FX Wizard
  • Layout
  • Devices

The Control tab allows you to manually switch the lights on/off it also allows you to control the level of brightness, set timers and also plan a schedule. The Gallery tab is the most fun you will have on the app. Here you can choose between a variety of preset effects such as:

Next is the FX Wizard which allows you to get creative and design your own effect. You start with a base pattern or draw the pattern this is a very interesting option to have.

The Layout tab allows the user to show the physical location of the lights in relation to one another. This tab allows you to customize your set-up even further and have the option for easy mapping or advanced mapping which takes multiple recordings and gives the user a more precise map of the lights.

Last but not least there is a device tab that displays every Twinkly device connected and shows you its current status.

Smart Home Compatability

The Twinkly Dots just like all the other models from Twinkly will connect to your smart home interface regardless of whether it is Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant but they are also compatible with Apple HomeKit and also Razer Chroma for those who want to link these to their gaming set up.

Verdict

The Twinkly Dots are a nice decorative option for any room and give you a little extra to your gaming set-up. It’s also nice to be able to link to your smart home set-up and create schedules.

However are they really stand-out products in a packed marketplace?

The Twinkly Dots do have that unique shape but if you are not concerned about a particular shape and looking for smart lights and are open to a different design you could save some pennies and purchase an alternative product from the likes of Govee or Tapo.
