Looking to take your steaming set up to the next level the Joby Wavo Boom arm is the gadget for you!

Joby is the brand on all content creators’ and streamers’ lips when looking for new tech and we have reviewed a number of their products from the Joby Swing, Joby Wavo Air, Joby Podzilla and the more recent Joby Wavo Pod. In this review, we review the Joby Wavo Boom Arm which actually works together with the Wavo Pod.

First Impressions

The Joby Wavo Boom Arm currently costs £89.95 which you will notice is nearly the same price as the Wavo Pod.  The Wavo Boom arm is very sturdy in its build and that articulating arm helps keep your desktop nice and tidy. The articulating arm allows you to quickly deploy and retreat the Joby Wavo Pod in seconds.

Design

The Joby Wavo Boom Arm consists of a solid inner frame with a plastic outer shell and comes with adjustable springs and moveable joints to create a spring-loaded mechanism to swing the arm open at different angles.

The Joby wavo arm when fully extended is 80cm long and when retracted at 40cm long. The Joby Wavo Boom Arm weighs 1.2kg so it’s quite heavy but once in position, you won’t be moving it around. In addition to the arm, there is also a lightweight G-clamp that can also be used as a cup holder.

The Joby Wavo Boom arm comes with 3 rotating joints well 2 moves and one is fixed. The tensioning of the arms can be manually adjusted to suit different microphones as you don’t have to have the Joby Wavo Pod but it helps keep the branding and quality consistent.

The Joby Wavo Boom arm comes in two main parts the articulating arm and the desk clamp. The camp actually provides the user with 3 uses:

  • A Cup Holder
  • Headphone hanger
  • C-Clamp

The C-Clamp is attached together using 3 removable hex screw heads. This clamp integrates a metal swivel head at one end and a large plastic thumb knob at the other end used for tightening. If you need instructions you can find them online as no instructions are provided.

If you removed the 3 hex screw heads this would allow you to remove the headphone holder from the C-Clamp. This allows you to have a much cleaner set up but it does require you to drill a hole through the desk which I expect might put some potential buyers off.

The wavo boom arm uses a tripod-style ball head that comes with a detachable ¼ inch screw to mount the microphone or camera which can be detached from the boom arm. Joby also provides you with 2 adapters to accommodate different-size mics:

  • ¼ inch to ⅝ inch
  • ¼ inch to ⅜ inch

Features

The Joby Wavo Boom Arm allows you to string your microphone wire through a groove in the arm hiding it from view and making it look streamlined. The Boom arm can also mount a DSLR camera for steaming purposes and can handle up to a 1KG payload. This is perfect for taking times photos if that was your plan in using it.

Verdict

If you are starting out as a podcaster or streamer or just want to upgrade your kit the Joby Wavo Boom Arm is a microphone desk mount with articulating arms that help keep your desktop tidy. It allows you to quickly deploy and retreat the mic in and out of your face in seconds.

The Joby Wavo Boom Arm provides versatility for the use of mics and even cameras and the bonus is the Joby Wavo Boom Arm is also its universal fit meaning if you have a mic that is not a Joby you could still connect it to the arm.

I was also impressed with the build quality and adjustable arm tensioning makes it more versatile than a standard mic stand. You will also be pleased with the silent spring-loaded mechanism allows you to move the arm even when recording. The size when fully extended is suitable for larger desks and the use of clever cable management keeps your set-up looking professional.

The Joby Boom arm is more expensive than a standard boom arm but when you consider the build quality and how solid and sturdy it is you will struggle to find much better on the market.
