In our next Ring Security Special, we cover the Ring Indoor camera that is designed to protect the inside of your house. This is part of the Ring family that includes the following:

  •  Ring Spotlight camera
  • Ring Doorbell 4
  • Ring Alarm 5-piece & outdoor siren

First Impressions

The Ring Indoor camera comes in at an affordable £39 and this camera provides full HD footage that allows you to see what is happening inside the home providing you peace of mind when you have the babysitter at the house or you are away on holiday and want to make sure everything is safe and sound or maybe just to check in on the dog.

The Ring Indoor Camera comes in two colours:

  • White
  • Black

The Indoor camera comes with a flexible stand and also allows for mounting and will connect with ease to an existing Ring set up at home and can also be viewed via the Ring App. The Indoor camera also comes with two-way audio & motion-activated notifications.

Unboxing

The Ring Indoor Cam is not packed with accessories and it does not need to be sometimes less is more.  You are provided with the camera, USB-C to Power adapter with UK & EU plugs, Quick Start Guide and some screws and raw plugs for if you are to install the camera on a wall or ceiling.

Design

The Ring Indoor camera is smaller than something like the Spotlight Camera in fact comes in at 46 x 46 x 75mm and is very lightweight. The body of the camera is made of plastic and it comes with a stand that is attached to the bottom of the camera and allows for a level of flexibility meaning you can angle the camera to get a particular view.

We found inserting the USB cable to be very easy to do so which is sometimes not always the case with security cameras. Finally, the setup button is on the top of the camera be careful as when adjusting the camera you may accidentally hit the button which will put the camera into set up mode. The positioning of the button is the only small letdown when it comes to the design.

What I also found very interesting is just how flexible you can be with installing the camera firstly not only can it just sit on a shelf you can also mount it to either the ceiling or a wall.

I was impressed this could be done considering how budget-friendly this device can be. Once set up in the place you want to record simply open up the ring app and set up will only take a few minutes it’s very easy to do.

Features

An issue some of you reading this might have experienced is the constant recording if you’re in the house there is no need to keep recording. The Ring Indoor camera has changed that via the app. Now just like the Ring Alarm, there are 3 modes:

  • Disarmed
  • Home
  • Away

These settings basically indicate when the camera recording should be on. For example, Disarmed and home turns off all internal cameras and away will turn on all the cameras connected to the Ring app inside and outside. The modes can be customized to select which cameras you want to record or not. You could set the cameras to record in the living room when you are upstairs in bed to provide that extra level of security.

What you will really like about this camera is if you have a ring alarm as this offers even more protection. If you leave the house and set the alarm your cameras will all spring into action. I really did like this kind of integration and it’s a must-buy for anyone with the Ring alarm who wants a little extra security.

Motion on the indoor camera is detected using the video feed to prevent 100 notifications. You can draw a motion zone which is just the area of interest. If you have animals you can also switch on the people-only mode which will only send a notification if a person is spotted. This was useful as it prevents any alerts caused by the family dog.

Just like the Ring outdoor camera video is recorded to the cloud but you will need to sign up to Ring Protect or Protect Plus. If you were going to take out the Ring protect plan it will only cost £2.50 a month or £24.99 a year and will give you a 30-day video history on this plan.

If you decided on the Ring protect Plus option that will cost you £8 a month or £80 a year and this will give you cloud storage for all your Ring devices plus assisted monitoring and cellular backup for your alarm system. If you are like me and have a number of Ring devices then £80 for the year seems reasonable to protect your house and its contents.

The Ring Indoor camera also comes with snapshot capture which will take a still image every 30 seconds but this can be adjusted up to every 3 minutes. This helps you fill in the blanks when you are scrolling through the timeline on your phone using the Ring protect app.

The timeline is still problematic you can scroll horizontally and the timeline will find events but this will be full of snapshots cluttering up the process of finding the right footage. It does allow you to adjust your search by day, and motion, live view but the process is still a little time-consuming.

There is an event history option that allows you to filter by type of event but won’t let you search by date. It’s not the worst thing to navigate through but the process could be improved significantly. Once you have selected the clip you can download it or favourite it to preserve the evidence or send it to the insurance company if a break-in was to occur.

Another feature of the Ring Indoor Camera is the fact you can link devices together for example if the indoor camera spots motion you can tell other devices what to do for example switching on the flood lights on the outdoor camera or start recording to catch a potential intruder in the act. Just remember you will end up with a lot of additional video footage you might not need.

The Indoor camera also allows for a live view feature so you can see what is happening in real-time for those who have a ring doorbell you will have already experienced this feature. You can activate the siren and use two-way talk the sound of your voice is very clear and the microphone to pick up their voice is also very good. I expect this feature would scare off a possible thief if used on the outdoor cameras, as for the indoor camera am not so sure it would scare someone off. As if their aim was to get inside your house an indoor camera is hardly going to stop them once inside.

Video Quality

The Ring indoor camera has a 140-degree field of view and can take in most of the room easily enough offering quality coverage. The camera also comes with 1080p resolution which offers enough to capture sharp detail.

In terms of the footage and images as you might expect the quality is the best in daylight. When taking a still the image could be improved its a little soft but overall the image is not too bad.

When the sun goes down this camera also works at night and will use a night colour mode this will use its IR lights to provide that black and white image of what is happening. The combination of IR and ambient light will give you that full-colour night vision. However, this will depend on the level of ambient light around. The picture can blur out some of the detail but if you want to spot a potential intruder this camera will allow you to do just that.

Verdict

The Ring Indoor camera protects the inside of your home and is a great choice especially if you already have other Ring devices. The camera offers high-quality video footage and the modes allow for complete control of when you want the camera to record or not. The fact you can pair this with the ring alarm is very useful for the overall security in the house.

The Ring Protect app as mentioned before can be a little time-consuming when finding a particular recording. I feel the app does need a little work and hopefully, that will come over time. Overall with a flexible stand allowing you to place it on a shelf or mount it to a wall or ceiling the Ring indoor camera provides excellent value for money for anyone looking to add an indoor camera to their existing security set-up.
