Design

The VOLTME MagPak 5K comes with a battery capacity of 5000mAh which is significantly more compared to Apple’s original version which comes in at 2920mAh. The MagPak 5k is pocket-sized as mentioned, coming in at 105 x 66.8 x 13.5mm and weight-wise, it’s very lightweight at only 134g.

VOLTME MagPak 5K Magnetic Battery Charger Review

The charger is finished in soft-touch Graphene material for better heat dissipation and is available in 5 colours. In this review, we were given the black version. The build matches the standard in regards to the size of the ring of magnets and alignment tab.

The right side of the MagSafe charger is where the USB-C charging port is and moving to the base there 4 LEDs to indicate how much battery life the charger has. There is an additional LED that indicates when the charger is in use and that is shown by an orange light.

4 LEDs – 100 to 75%

3 LEDs – 75 to 50%

2 LEDs – 50 to 25%

1 LED- 25 to 0%

There is also a button next to the LEDs that if you press it you would see how much battery is in the charger or if you want to charge something using the USB-C port. Now when it’s time the recharge the MagPak it will take just over an hour to fully recharge.

Now the 7.5W output via the Magsafe charger might seem a little on the low side but compare it to Apple and it’s pretty standard as a higher output could create heat which is not great for batteries. When using the wired option to charge you are provided 15W which is decent considering the size of the charger remember this device is designed to get you out of trouble not be your main charging device.

There is also a low-power Qi charging mode designed to allow you to charge your earbuds or smartwatches. To activate this you need to double-press the power button and then align your accessory on the Qi coil. The MagPak knows that the current draw will be low and will not shut off automatically as it would for mobile phones.

Features

The key feature of the MagPak 5k is the kickstand which is a simple angled flap on the rear of the MagSafe charger and it works really well. The angle even allows you to charge your phone while in portrait orientation.

You can also rotate the phone and the stand can be used in landscape orientation this is useful if you were going to watch a video and wanted to charge the phone at the same time handy when sitting on a train and watching a film. When you use the stand for the first time you need to flip the cover stand to 90 degrees this activates the fixation points.

Other features include wireless and wired charging simultaneously providing a total output of 12W. There is also a feature that will make the indicator light flash when it detects foreign objects or devices that do not support wireless charging this is known as foreign object detection.

Verdict

The VOLTME MagPak 5K charger is a fantastic little MagSafe charger but when using the device on your phone you need to have a TPU case that has some MagSafe magnets built-in as if not the magnetic attraction will weaken preventing the phone to be charged correctly and you will notice the slightest knock with MagPak would simply fall off. So make sure you have the correct phone case.

VOLTME MagPak 5K Magnetic Battery Charger Review

When you consider the cost at £46 it’s hard to argue it’s not value for money and the fact it comes with USB-C charging port is future-proof. I was also impressed by the fact it comes with low-current charging and wireless and wired charging functionality meaning you could charge 2 phones at once.

If your looking for a portable MagSafe charger with a useful kickstand that will fit in your pocket when out and about this charger will be the perfect accessory to give your iPhone a boost when needed the most especially for iPhone users 12 and above.
